This seminar is initiated by Prof. Chibuike Uche, in his capacity as the Stephen Ellis Chair for the Governance of Finance and Integrity in Africa. For most multinational corporations (MNCs), Africa is a continent of great opportunities and risks. Its growing population and dearth of basic infrastructure represent untapped market opportunities. On the other hand, political and social instability and widespread corruption constitute obvious dangers to the long-term interests of businesses operating in the continent. Arguably, these pitfalls were first concretized by the widespread nationalization and/or indigenization of foreign business interests Africa in the 1960s and 70s. This workshop will bring together researchers and business managers with experience in Africa to address the following questions: Is the African brand of capitalism (Africapitalism) different? Is there a difference between the normative and positive construct of corporate governance in Africa? Is the context of corporate social responsibility in Africa different? How do MNCs adapt to the peculiar political and economic risks of doing business in Africa?

This book was published in the African Studies Collection, volume 70, in February 2018. It will be launched now, with presentations by Dr. Fenneke Sysling and author Leonor Faber-Jonker herself. Introduction by ASCL Director Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald. In September 2011, twenty Namibian skulls were repatriated from the collection of the Charité university hospital in Berlin. The remains had been in Germany for more than a century: they belonged to victims of the 'German-Herero war' (1904–1908) in German South-West Africa, a genocide that cost the lives of eighty per cent of the Herero and half the Nama population. The majority of the skulls had arrived in Berlin as preserved heads, and all had been used for scientific race research in the first decades of the twentieth century. Please register

Een nieuwe reisserie van Bram Vermeulen, langs en door de grootste zandwoestijn op aarde. Eeuwenlang voeren kolonisten aan de Sahara voorbij. De grote woestijn van Afrika was te heet en te ondoordringbaar. Nu heeft Europa zijn zuidgrens naar de Sahara verlegd, om er migratie en terreur te bestrijden. Hoe denken de bewoners van de Sahara over deze bemoeienis? In de nieuwe vijfdelige VPRO-reisserie Sahara doorkruist Bram Vermeulen de woestijn van west naar oost en van de Atlantische Oceaan tot de Rode Zee. Hij ervaart de hitte, de nieuwe Europese kolonisten en de gevaren van oprukkend jihadisme. 5 afleveringen: Mauritanië, Timboektoe (Mali), Niger (2x), Soedan. Op NPO-2.

Mode is hot in Afrika, maar dé Afrikaanse mode bestaat niet. In verschillende steden bestaan diverse bloeiende modescenes. Van streetwear tot couture en van experimenteel tot meer ingetogen: dragers, makers en kenners tonen er hun identiteit, persoonlijke smaak en achtergrond mee. Vaak gelinkt aan de stad waarin ze wonen. De stad die hen een spiegel voorhoudt. Fashion Cities Africa toont de diversiteit aan mode in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos en Nairobi – door de ogen van 15 lokale experts. In Fashion Cities Africa bekijk je de stedelijke modescenes vanuit het perspectief van lokale ontwerpers, stylisten, shophouders, fotografen en bloggers. Zo nemen broer en zus 2ManySiblings je mee naar de markt in Nairobi, waar ze tweedehands designerkleding kopen om te restylen. Ook vind je in de tentoonstelling creaties van onder meer The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) en het modelabel Maki Oh (Lagos), dat gedragen wordt door onder andere Beyoncé en Michelle Obama. Het Tropenmuseum selecteerde voor deze tentoonstelling Nederlandse experts die hun Afrikaanse roots verwerken in mode: Daily Paper, Karim Adduchi, Lady Africa, Doru Komonoteng Loboka en Nsimba Valene Lontanga. Voor Fashion Cities Africa delen zij hun inspiratie, werkwijze én ontwerpen met de museumbezoeker.

The upgraded Tata Madiba exhibition content and objects are meant to stimulate conversation about his life, struggles and extraordinary contribution to protection of South Africa’s rich biodiversity; but also connect to contemporary issues around conservation and sustainability.  The exhibition also includes the many species named after him and those he and his fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island.  The exhibition includes as its central piece the iMadiba Project which is a participatory art project conceptualized and created by artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel. It is endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation The intention of the installation or micro museum is to facilitate dialogue, memory, reflection and forward thinking. The combination of the Tata Madiba exhibition and the iMadiba Project art installation is therefore an apt marriage to celebrate the centenary of this great statesman Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Het Stedelijk Museum toont dit najaar in 6 zalen nieuw werk van de jonge Amsterdamse kunstenaar Raquel van Haver. Spirits of the Soil is een nieuwe serie monumentale schilderijen speciaal gemaakt voor deze tentoonstelling. Het is Raquel van Havers eerste museale solotentoonstelling in Amsterdam. Speciaal voor het Stedelijk Museum maakte Van Haver een nieuwe serie monumentale schilderijen waaronder het reusachtige werk We Don’t Sleep As We Parade All Through The Night (4 bij 9 meter). Daarin verbeeldt zij op een expressieve manier haar ervaringen in de Bijlmermeer Amsterdam, waar zij woont en werkt, en reflecteert zij op haar verblijf in de ‘barrios’ en ‘favelas’ van megasteden in de Caraïben, Afrika en Latijns-Amerika. De kunstenaar maakt naar eigen zeggen ‘luide’ schilderkunst waarin ze vooral de overeenkomsten tussen groepen mensen benadrukt, met empathie voor de groepen in de marge van de samenleving. Raquel van Haver won onlangs de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst 2018. Het nieuwe ensemble van schilderijen Spirits of the Soil vindt zijn oorsprong in een reis die Van Haver in 2017 maakte naar Lagos, Nigeria op uitnodiging van de African Artists Foundation.

This exhibition coincides with the conference The Future of the African City that will be organized in cooperation with African Architecture Matters on 24 January 2019.  In this collective exhibition three artists participate: Cindy van der Aa, Sapin Makengele and Moke-fils (Jean-Marie Mosengo). They show paintings inspired on the African city. The exhibition will be shown from 2 November 2018 till 31 January 2019 in the library (ground floor) and the corridors (3rd floor) of the African Studies Centre Leiden, Pieter de la Court building. Durf jij jezelf te zijn? Of sterker nog… kun jij wel jezelf zijn? Waar wil je bij horen en ten koste of bate van wat? Kan een aangepaste ‘jij’ tegelijk met jouw roots bestaan? Jezelf zijn in de huidige maatschappij is nog nooit zo ingewikkeld geweest. Je aanpassen is nog steeds een vereiste om erkend te worden en om ergens helemaal bij te horen. In Women in Love gaan vier vrouwen de confrontaties aan met de opgelegde identiteit en eigen identiteit. Hoe durven zij zichzelf te zijn? Over de nieuwe maker: Sarah Huygens is een eigenwijze Westerse Afrikaanse theatermaakster, die grenzen bij zichzelf en haar spelers opzoekt. Zij studeerde theater & educatie aan de Hogeshool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Op 25 nov. in ZIMIHC theater Stefanus (Utrecht) en 7 december in Bijlmer Parktheater (A'dam).

38 geselecteerde kunstenaars geven een gevarieerd en hedendaags beeld van wat Galerie SANAA vertegenwoordigt. Deze expositie vormt daarmee een ijkpunt in het bestaan van de galerie. Een prikkelende selectie van hedendaagse kunst op een uitbundige manier gepresenteerd.
