In Addis Abeba ontdekte The Ex de geestverwante Ililta Band, met azmari-zanger Chalachew Ashenafi. Azmari’s zijn troubadours die met humor, poëzie en onomwonden kritiek reageren op actuele gebeurtenissen. De Ililta Band omlijst het met dansbare muziek, gespeeld op de drie belangrijkste traditionele instrumenten: masinqo (éénsnarige viool), krar (zessnarige lier) en kebero (drums van grote blikken en koeienhuid).

Zanger en toetsenist Dele Sosimi leidt zijn eigen Afrobeat Orchestra, naar voorbeeld van de legendarische Nigeriaanse saxofonist/vocalist Fela Kuti (1938-1997). Net als de beroemde drummer Tony Allen speelde Sosimi ooit in de begeleidingsgroep Egypt 80 van Kuti. Als bandleiders zetten zij de politiek geladen, onweerstaanbaar swingende afro-funk van hun leermeester voort in de eenentwintigste eeuw.
