Tijdens de zomerse muziekzondagen die plaatsvinden tussen 7 juli en 18 augustus treden Afrikaanse muzikanten en bands op in het Buitenmuseum. Van Ghanese kologo ritmes tot Malinese jazz, bands met steltlopers en zelfs vuurspuwers. Het bijwonen van de optredens is gratis, u betaalt alleen de museumentree.

Importantly,The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz has also seen a phenomenal growth in the number of developing jazz artists who have been given exposure and a platform on which to perform.

Garabgi betekent “boom” in het Wolof (een taal in Senegal) en heeft daarnaast nog vele andere betekenissen: eenheid, oorsprong, verscheidenheid, medicijn en wijsheid. Voor percussionist Mamour Seck staat Garabgi symbool voor de manier waarop hij muziek ervaart. Muziek is van iedereen, nationaal en internationaal, en brengt mensen van over de hele wereld samen (denk bijvoorbeeld aan jazz). Mamour Seck is opgegroeid in Senegal en kwam als zestienjarige percussionist naar Amsterdam.

Het vrolijke liedje ‘Sunrise Everyday’ van de oorspronkelijk uit Zimbabwe afkomstige band Mann Friday is hard op weg om alsnog een joekel van een zomerhit te worden. Hun nieuwe album ‘Trainrides And Radio Play’ komt in augustus uit en wordt officieel gepresenteerd in de Melkweg! Al een aantal jaar is Mann Friday gevestigd in Londen, waarvandaan ze de rest van de wereld willen veroveren met hun razendcatchy, zomerse mix van Afrikaanse muziek en Westerse pop.
