Since 1994, South Africa and Paul Van Kemenade have a warm relationship. In that year, Van Kemenade”s quintet toured South Africa for 7 weeks, where they met great South African musicians and played with them. Now in the project ‘SOUL ‘AFRIQUE’  they meet again, playing compositions of each other. A spectacular collaboration again between the outstanding renowned South African trumpeter Fezile ‘Feya’ Faku, tenorist Sydney Mnisi, guitarist/vocalist Louis Mhlanga and the the quintet of altosaxophonist/composer Paul van Kemenade (Dutch Boy Edgar award).

The Decolonial Summer School Middelburg, the only program in Europe dedicated exclusively to discuss the legacies of the Transatlantic Enslavement Trade from a transdisciplinary perspective, is once again bringing scholars and artists as faculty and among them are many contributors of BE.BOP. Framer Framed is hosting a special 5 hour event with BE.BOP allies. There will be a screening of selected works, a roundtable with individual resonances on the healing and liberation experiences of BE.BOP 2014. SPIRITUAL REVOLUTIONS AND “THE SCRAMBLE FOR AFRICA” (Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin + Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen), after an introduction by BE.BOP curator, Alanna Lockward.

24 liederen, 24 films. De Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar William Kentridge, publieksfavoriet van het festival in 2012, geeft Franz Schuberts monumentale liederencyclus Winterreise een nieuwe dimensie met zijn kenmerkende collages en in houtskool getekende animaties. De liederen vertellen het verhaal van een jonge dichter die, afgewezen door zijn geliefde, van wanhoop vervuld door een nachtelijk winters landschap doolt. Net als de liederen drukt het werk van Kentridge vaak een onbestemd gevoel uit. Zijn films vormen een poëtische, visuele tegenstem bij de vertolking door Matthias Goerne, een van de bekendste hedendaagse Schubertvertolkers, en pianist Markus Hinterhäuser. ‘Opdat beeld en geluid elkaar zo bevruchten dat er nieuwe inzichten ontstaan,’ aldus Kentridge.
