Agenda 14 - 20 September 2014
Zondag 14 September
African Masterpieces - The Story of the Kingdom of Ife
The first exhibition to focus on the art of Ife, an ancient city in modern day Nigeria. The artists of Ife made sculptures from metal, stone and terracotta that have placed the region on the map in terms of world art history. The exhibition displays some of the world's most sophisticated historical art works – more than 100 sculptures of metal, stone and terracotta from the 12th to 16th centuries tell the story of the African civilisation of Ife, ancestors of the Yoruba, one of the largest ethnic groups of modern day Nigeria. The exhibition has previously been on view in the USA, Great Britain and Spain.
African Masters - Art from the Ivory Coast
Starting point of the exhibition is the general consensus among art historians today that in the so-called primitive societies individual masters created unique works of the highest quality. Approximately 180 masks, figures and everyday objects from Ivory Coast and neighbouring countries, created by exceptionally talented artists working in a wide range of fields, sheds new light on the role of the artist in African society. The exhibition sets out to place these outstanding works in an art historical context that is comparable to that of our great masters, from Michelangelo to Picasso.

Met werk van Manu Baeyens (Gent, 1972), Eva Spierenburg (Lelystad, 1987) en Gareth Nyandoro (Zimbabwe, 1982). Moshekwa Langa – The Jealous Lover
Moshekwa Langa’s work was shown in the late nineties – now he is present with his site-specific work The Jealous Lover. Moshekwa Langa (*1975 in Bakenberg/Southafrica) is just as familiar with European culture, and particularly literature, as he is with the visual culture of South Africa. He combines and weaves together diverse European and African themes, motifs and elements, creating installations, works on paper, photographs and videos that form a new assemblage. He often uses ordinary materials like strings, watercolors, found items, tape, thread reels and threads. It is precisely that these threads tell (hi)stories. They connect different objects, thoughts, associations; with his threads Langa weaves a visual and often also linguistic net of political experiences and personal memories – between Apartheid and exile.
Zuid-Afrikaanse voorstellingen op Amsterdam Fringe Festival
This year at AFF: Crazy in Love - A Conspiracy of Clowns, a Standard Bank Ovation Award 2013 (at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa), a winning, smash-hit show. Inspired by John Irving’s Until I Find You, Crazy in Love is devised and performed by Andrew Buckland (multiple Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Winner) and Liezl de Kock (Fleur du Cap Best Actress nominee). And Siembamba takes a look at a South African phenomenon often taken for granted –the relationship between a black domestic worker and the white children she helps to raise. Various people are affected by this “arrangement” of black women leaving their own families behind to become a second mother to upper or middle class white children - especially the women's own children. Winner of a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award 2014. Also: Nakhane Toure from Port Elizabeth.

PhD Defence Paul van Asperen: Evaluation of innovative land tools in sub-Saharan Africa
Woensdag 17 September 2014 12:00
PhD Defence Paul van Asperen: Evaluation of innovative land tools in sub-Saharan Africa: three cases from a peri-urban context. Sub-Saharan Africa is urbanizing rapidly, but most countries lack appropriate tools to manage their urban growth. This creates both risks and opportunities for prospective land holders, resulting in a tangle of insecure land rights and claims under multiple tenure systems. Recently, innovative land tools have been proposed and implemented to formalize land tenure. It is envisaged that tenure security for land holders will increase and in turn contribute to poverty reduction. This study evaluates such tools in three peri-urban areas in Lusaka (Zambia), Oshakati (Namibia) and Gaborone (Botswana), with a focus on the perspective of the land holders.

How far how near - the world in the Stedelijk
How Far how Near – the world in the Stedelijk argues for a greater emphasis on art from regions outside Europe and North America, with the collection of the Stedelijk as its starting point. Prompted by a number of recent acquisitions of work by African artists, including Dorothy Amenuke, Meschac Gaba, Abdoulaye Konaté, and Billie Zangewa, the exhibition centers around the key question of how museum collections and exhibition policies historically and today are limited and challenged in relation to geographical emphasis. Part of Global Collaborations, a three-year project, in which the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam aims to generate an informed and well-balanced overview of developments in contemporary art from a global perspective.

The exhibition deals with the Dutch contribution to the struggle against apartheid and was commissioned by both the South African Embassy in The Netherlands and the Dutch Embassy in South Africa and produced with support of the International Institute of Social History (IISH).
