Agenda 06 - 12 September 2015
Zondag 06 September
Arts Alive Festival 2015
The countdown has started for the Arts Alive Festival in September with theatre, music, dance and the annual Jazz on the Lake concert. The festival is back with a full programme traversing the continents from Africa to the Caribbean to the USA, to showcase the diversity and quality artistic offerings for the residents of Joburg. The festival will feature a range of exciting overseas and local artists within literature, poetry, master class workshops, music and dance; a diverse range of music from Jazz to Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Dancehall reggae and traditional rhythms to Kwaito.
New exhibition at the ASC: The Spiritual Highway: Religious World Making in Megacity Lagos
Together with the award-winning Nigerian photographer Akintunde Akinleye, anthropologist Dr. Marloes Janson hit the road in the summer of 2013 to map the most important and busiest Nigerian road - the 120-kilometer long Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. While it has failed as the artery linking the north and the south of Nigeria, the highway has succeeded as a stage for the performance of public religiosity to the extent that it can be described as a 'Spiritual Highway'. The convergence of Christian and Muslim elements makes the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway a true crossroads. At this crossroads prayer camps act as road-builders in rendering meaningful the unstable flux of life in megacity Lagos.
Simuda Nyuma (Oeganda) - Forward Ever Backward Never
Woe - zon 14:00 - 22:00 uur, gratis entree
exhibition: Afrika Architecture, Culture & Identity
Proud to announce the opening of Afrika / Architecture, Culture and Identity which will take place on Wednesday June 24. The exhibition will be opened with a speech by ArchiAfrica chairman Joe Osae-Addo. Especially for this exhibition I made four slideshows, showing Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi and Kinshasa, selected out of the large archive that I produced working on Africa Junctions. From the series Africa Junctions - Capturing the City, there will be five large wall-prints shown.

ASC Seminar: No system, no politics? Iconoclastic disruptions in contemporary South Africa
Maandag 07 September 2015 15:30 - 17:00
Democratic South Africa has seen the rise of what I call coarse or granular political actions. By challenging the legitimacy of elections, diverse campaigns have unveiled a bargain element that undergirds the concept of a representative parliament either through charismatic personalities or strong party constituencies. Speaker: Antonádia Borges, University of Brasilia. Please register
