The countdown has started for the Arts Alive Festival in September with theatre, music, dance and the annual Jazz on the Lake concert. The festival is back with a full programme traversing the continents from Africa to the Caribbean to the USA, to showcase the diversity and quality artistic offerings for the residents of Joburg. The festival will feature a range of exciting overseas and local artists within literature, poetry, master class workshops, music and dance; a diverse range of music from Jazz to Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Dancehall reggae and traditional rhythms to Kwaito.

This year's Cape Town Fringe, South Africa's freshest arts festival boasting a line-up of more than 70 exciting productions that span theatre, dance, physical theatre, music and magic. The heart of this year's Fringe will be City Hall, while other exciting entertainment will also be presented at the Alexander Bar, Galloway Theatre and Guga S’thebe in Langa. Tot de geselecteerde kunstenaars behoren de Ghana ThinkTank, een mondiale denktank die in 2006 in Ghana werd opgericht door Christopher Robbins, John Ewing en Matey Odonkor.

Together with the award-winning Nigerian photographer Akintunde Akinleye, anthropologist Dr. Marloes Janson hit the road in the summer of 2013 to map the most important and busiest Nigerian road - the 120-kilometer long Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. While it has failed as the artery linking the north and the south of Nigeria, the highway has succeeded as a stage for the performance of public religiosity to the extent that it can be described as a 'Spiritual Highway'. The convergence of Christian and Muslim elements makes the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway a true crossroads. At this crossroads prayer camps act as road-builders in rendering meaningful the unstable flux of life in megacity Lagos.

De vijfde editie plaats van de Nederlandse versie van Felabration: celebrating life and music of Fela Kuti. Wereldwijd vinden rondom Fela's geboortedag (15 oktober) feesten plaats ter ere van deze 'Godfather of Afrobeat'. Sinds enkele jaren wordt deze avond door Jungle by Night en het label Kindred Spirits georganiseerd in de hoofdstedelijke poptempel Paradiso. Sinds afgelopen jaar verdandert ook Doornroosje in Nijmegen in een dampende, swingende Neder-versie van  Kuti's nachtclub 'The Shrine'.

De uit Timboektoe afkomstige gitarist en zanger Samba Touré wordt door velen beschouwd als beste gitarist van Mali. Hij is de muzikale erfgenaam van de koning van de desert blues, die in 2006 overleed: Ali Farka Touré. Samba Touré's moeder zong bij Ali Farka touré en Samba werd vijftien jaar geleden gevraagd om in diens band te spelen, tijdens tournees door Europa en de Verenigde Staten. Hierdoor leerde Samba voor hem nieuwe muziekstijlen en ritmes kennen, die hij opnam in zijn eigen blues en er een heel eigen draai aan gaf.
