The 24th edition of Afrika Filmfestival will take place from 26 April till 11 May 2019 in Leuven - Belgium. Afrika Filmfestival, for some a fixed value in the film landscape, for others still unknown territory. One would not immediately associate Africa with 'film', but that is completely unjustified. The African film culture flourishes, its roots settle ever deeper into the cinematographic ground. Thanks to the festival, the public can experience this bloom. Through film, Afrika Filmfestival enlarges your world view and invalidates the prevailing ideas about Africa. It shows the cultural products and perspectives of this surprising continent. Every edition focuses on a country. The thematic subdivisions help the public to get to know the current and special aspects of African film. Come, discover and enjoy!
Another Day of Life

In 1976 verscheen Jeszcze dzień życia van de legendarische en veel gelauwerde Poolse journalist Ryszard Kapuściński (1932 - 2007). In dit boek, in het Engels vertaald als Another Day of Life, doet hij verslag van de Angolese onafhankelijkheidsstrijd en de daarop volgende burgeroorlog in de jaren 70 - een indrukwekkend verslag, zowel journalistiek als literair.
Cold Case Hammarskjöld
In 1957 begon de Zweedse diplomaat Dag Hammarskjöld aan een tweede ambtstermijn als secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties. Het rommelde in de wereld: naast de Koude Oorlog, was er vanwege de dekolonisatie grote onrust op het Afrikaanse continent. Hammarskjöld deed voor Afrika wat hij kon, maar maakte zich daarbij bij velen niet geliefd. In september 1961 kwam hij bij een Afrikaanse trip om het leven; zijn vliegtuig stortte neer in een woud in Noord-Rhodesië (het huidige Zambia). Was het een ongeluk of was het opzet? De ware oorzaak is nooit achterhaald. Ruim vijftig jaar later probeert de Deense filmmaker, journalist en provocateur Mads Brügger samen met de Zweedse privé detective Göran Bjorkdahl deze cold case alsnog op te lossen. Ze onderzoeken resten van het vliegtuigwrak, spreken met niet eerder gehoorde getuigen en duiken in de archieven. Maar aan alle kanten worden ze tegengewerkt. Terwijl het onderzoek vordert, stuiten zij op een andere zaak, die groter en schokkender is dan de dood van Hammarskjöld.

Gifts from Babylon - korte film over gedeporteerde Gambiaanse terugkeermigrant.
Op zaterdag 11 en zondag 12 mei in Filmhuis Den Haag: een film van Bas Ackermann en Emiel Martens. Op zaterdag een nagesprek met de makers. Wanneer Amadou na vijf jaar illegaal in Europa te hebben gewoond terugkeert naar zijn geboortedorp in Gambia, West-Afrika, is hij veel meer veranderd dan zijn familie voor mogelijk had gehouden. Op vrijdag 17 mei 2019 om 21.00 uur in filmtheater Rialto (Amsterdam) : Reggae Vibrations de exclusieve Nederlandse première van Yardie, het Jamaicaans-Britse misdaaddrama gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Victor Headley en geregisseerd door Idris Elba (de nieuwe James Bond!). Vóór die hoofdfilm wordt ook nog Gifts from Babylon gedraaid, een korte film over de de psychologische impact van illegale migratie van Afrika naar de EU door de ogen van een gedeporteerde Gambiaanse terugkeermigrant. Na het filmprogramma, zo rond kwart over elf uur, is er een borrel in de foyer van Rialto met op de achtergrond fijne reggaebeats van DJ’s Joss-Flo Selecting. De avond geldt als de officiële vooraankondiging van World Cinema Amsterdam (WCA), het jaarlijkse filmfestival voor wereldcinema dat dit jaar weer in augustus in Rialto (en enkele andere plekken in Amsterdam) wordt gehouden.
