Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Die dubbelzinnigheid is de kracht van het werk, en maakt het, volgens de jury, levendig en urgent. Gelijktijdig met de tentoonstelling in de Hermitage Amsterdam, toont Matloga zijn werk in de tentoonstelling We just want to be closer in de ABN AMRO Kunstruimte. Deze duotentoonstelling laat werk zien van twee Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars uit verschillende generaties: Singarum J. Moodley (1922-1987) en Neo I. Matloga (1993). De werken tonen een fascinerend gelaagd verhaal over vrijheid en zelfbeschikking tijdens en na de Apartheid. Op zondag 22 augustus host World Cinema Amsterdam x Africadelic in LantarenVenster een vertoning van de veelgeprezen Nigeriaanse film Eyimofe (This is My Desire, 2020). Dit drama, dat vorig jaar op Berlinale te zien was, portretteert het moderne leven in Lagos, de hoofdstad van Nigeria, door de ogen van twee inwoners die vergaande plannen hebben om de stad en het land te verlaten. Ook hebben we twee voorfilms voor jullie deze dag: de Gambiaanse ultra-short Help! (2020) en Ndanka Ndanka (2020), een nieuwe muziekvideo van het  Gambiaans/Senegalees/Nederlandse collectief Dandana met de Nigeriaanse albino Rastaman Simon Chedoke Uletu in de hoofdrol. De films worden ingeleid door Christopher Tijan Smith, de Gambiaanse acteur en scenarioschrijver van Help! die asiel heeft aangevraagd in Nederland en momenteel in een AZC in Assen verblijft. Eyimofe is de debuutfilm van de Nigeriaanse filmmakers en (tweeling)broers Arie en Chuko Esiri.

John Edmonds (1989, US) is the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2021. Part of this prize is the solo exhibition A Sidelong Glance. In his work, Edmonds examines issues of identity and power from an African-American perspective in an apparently simple yet essentially culturally complex way. The African art objects Edmonds uses in the work have many facets. They function as symbols of traditional African cultural heritage or bearers of meanings of diaspora and memory. No matter what their exact reference is, they function as a means to explore subjects such as displacement and expropriation in contemporary society. Not only does Edmonds broaden the tradition of studio portraiture, but he also thoughtfully claims his place in rewriting the past and anchors it in our current world, where authenticity and identity are fluid.

In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”
The opening of the exhibition exists of a short documentary based on the photo series, an introduction by Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald and a guided tour by Ilvy. Read more on the Born Free website.

Vanaf 5 februari 2022 presenteert Kunsthal KAdE de tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs’. Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

Holland Festival en Melkweg presenteren: Sho Modjozi! Live vanuit de OZ ontvangen we op maandagavond 20 juni de Zuid-Afrikaanse zangeres, rapper, actrice en poëet Sho Madjozi. In haar energieke, ritmische muziek omarmt zij de Tsonga-cultuur uit haar thuisland, met elementen van Gqom en afropop, bijgestaan door haar expressieve smaak voor mode. Daarnaast hebben we aan Aunty Rayzor op de line-up een rappe toevoeging. Met haar messcherpe beats met invloeden van afrobeat en afrohouse performt deze jonge rapper Engelstalig en in haar moedertaal Yoruba. Als 'Naija Thugress' maakte ze eerder al naam in de Nigeriaanse underground, en nu is ze klaar om haar muziek met Amsterdam te delen. Met een elegantie als Erykah Badu en zo fierce zoals Missy Elliot, absoluut eentje om naar uit te kijken! Naast deze twee snel opkomende fenomenen ontvangen we deze avond nog meer vrouwelijke Afrikaanse contemporary artiesten, mc's en dj's, die binnenkort bekend zullen worden gemaakt.

Op zondag 22 augustus host World Cinema Amsterdam x Africadelic in LantarenVenster een vertoning van de veelgeprezen Nigeriaanse film Eyimofe (This is My Desire, 2020). Dit drama, dat vorig jaar op Berlinale te zien was, portretteert het moderne leven in Lagos, de hoofdstad van Nigeria, door de ogen van twee inwoners die vergaande plannen hebben om de stad en het land te verlaten. Ook hebben we twee voorfilms voor jullie deze dag: de Gambiaanse ultra-short Help! (2020) en Ndanka Ndanka (2020), een nieuwe muziekvideo van het  Gambiaans/Senegalees/Nederlandse collectief Dandana met de Nigeriaanse albino Rastaman Simon Chedoke Uletu in de hoofdrol. De films worden ingeleid door Christopher Tijan Smith, de Gambiaanse acteur en scenarioschrijver van Help! die asiel heeft aangevraagd in Nederland en momenteel in een AZC in Assen verblijft. Eyimofe is de debuutfilm van de Nigeriaanse filmmakers en (tweeling)broers Arie en Chuko Esiri.

In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”

Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

Hippolyte Moussa-Mangoumbel was a Senegalese born on the island of Gorée in 1856. He participated in the French wars of occupation in West Africa, then settled in Nantes as a salesman and died in Le Havre in 1912. After 1895, his daily life was gradually organised around an obsession, that of the "mysterious kidnapping" of his parents. Supposedly members of the royal family of Loango, they were allegedly the victims of a plot orchestrated by the governor of Senegal, who had them captured and transported to Gorée. For years, Moussa-Mangoumbel looked for revenge, unsuccessfully published his story (in books and fliers) and alerted the press and the authorities by mail to have his status as the successor to the throne of Loango recognised. In this presentation Juliette Ruaud (Les Afriques dans le Monde) will show that even an action as atypical and seemingly irrational as claiming to be the prince of Loango (and later of the Congo) as he did can be the object of a socio-historical analysis. Such behaviour raises classic sociological questions, notably those of vocation, aspirations for social mobility and distinction. Reconstructing Moussa-Mangoumbel's successive socialising experiences provides an understanding of how he came to incorporate such high expectations. In this seminar, Ruaud will also show how one can explore his texts, reinserting them into a larger set of writing and reading practices, and highlighting the circumstances of their writing. Finally, she will look at the circulation and reception of these unconventional texts in France and in Senegal. Far from being mere curiosities, these writings blur some of the most obvious chronologies of anti-colonialism in Senegal, reveal to us a memory of slavery that is hardly available, and inform us about the tensions of imperialism in the first decades of the European occupation of West and Equatorial Africa.

Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Ontmoeting tussen Afrika en westerse klassieken. Zangeres Angélique Kidjo zingt over scheppingsmythen uit Benin in haar moedertaal Yoruba op muziek van minimal-componist Philip Glass. Een avond die muziekstijlen en culturen bij elkaar brengt. Zijn samenwerking met Angelique Kidjo besloot Philip Glass met de woorden: ‘Angelique, samen hebben we een brug gebouwd die nog niemand eerder heeft begaan.’ Ifé is ook de titel van het avondprogramma rondom dit baanbrekende werk, waarin nog veel meer grenzen worden overbrugd. Componiste Errollyn Wallen, geboren in Belize, mengt in Concerto Grosso oud en nieuw: van barok tot jazz en minimal. En Tunde Jegede, kora-speler, cellist, en componist met Nigeriaanse roots, bewerkt speciaal voor vanavond het werk Exile & Return voor West-Afrikaanse kora en strijkorkest, waarin hij zelf als solist zal optreden.

In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”
The opening of the exhibition exists of a short documentary based on the photo series, an introduction by Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald and a guided tour by Ilvy. Read more on the Born Free website.

Het Holland Festival gaat tot in de late uurtjes door in de ongepolijste sfeer van nachtclub Lofi in het Westelijk Havengebied. Met op 24 juni onder meer de indrukwekkende samenwerking tussen Gabber Modus Operandi en Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe. Voor deze avond slaan Holland Festival en Lofi de handen ineen met het fameuze Berlijnse festival voor avontuurlijke elektronische muziek CTM en het Oegandese collectief, festival en platenlabel Nyege Nyege. De avond begint buiten, in de stadstuin, met de gedeconstrueerde gamelanklanken van het experimentele trio Uwalmassa (Indonesië) en het hallucinante geluid van Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe (Oeganda), die met acht mannen één grote xylofoon bespelen. Dan verplaatst het feest zich naar binnen voor onder meer een hyperenergiek optreden van Scotch Rolex met rapper MC Yallah (Kenia) en de explosieve klanken van het duo Gabber Modus Operandi (Indonesië), waarbij ook Nakibembe Xylophone Troupe en Wahono (frontman van Uwalmassa) weer zullen aansluiten. Live acts die elkaar versterken en een onvergetelijke indruk zullen achterlaten! De line-up bevat sets van dj’s die zich aan de avontuurlijke en energieke kant van het spectrum bevinden: Marcelle (Nederland), Arazaka (Burundi/Nederland), Helena Hauff (Duitsland) en Parrish Smith (Nederland). Verwacht dus een avond die de volledige dansvloer in extase brengt.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.
