NABC’s flagship conference Africa Works! will be held for the fifth time on the 28th of June in Amare, The Hague. The importance of innovation has been further emphasised by the COVID-19 crisis that exposed the fragility of interconnected economies, leading to calls for increased “resilience” in the recovery phase. Innovative thinking is increasingly promoted to address some of the grand challenges of the 21st century: providing food, water, and energy to the continent’s soaring population (by 2030, one in five people will be African), while staying within the limits of an intricately linked system that is undergoing (climate) change. Africa Works! 2022 is designed to promote and facilitate international trade between Africa and the Netherlands, facilitate foreign direct investment in Africa, and provide a platform to expand or establish business operations in Africa.

Dit jaar bestaat Amsterdam Roots Festival 40 jaar. Begonnen in 1983 in de Melkweg als Africa Roots Festival zijn we getransformeerd naar een performing arts festival op verschillende locaties in de stad. Transformatie is ook het thema van onze jubileumeditie. We werpen een blik op de transformatie van het festival, maar ook op de transformatie van onze samenleving. De sociale ongelijkheid is gegroeid, tegelijkertijd is het besef over ongelijke kansen en behandeling enorm toegenomen. De laatste jaren wordt de roep om transformatie, de roep om rechtvaardigheid ook steeds luider. Amsterdam Roots Festival ijvert al 40 jaar om de horizon van bezoekers te verbreden door kunst uit alle delen van de wereld te brengen. Aanvankelijk muziek, maar de laatste jaren ook toneel, circus, spoken word en debat. Tijdens deze jubileumeditie wil Amsterdam Roots samen met artiesten, sprekers en publiek onderzoeken hoe muziek, verhalen en kunst een rol kan spelen in bewustwording en maatschappelijke transformaties. Wat kan kunst hier betekenen? Hoe kan het inspireren en kan verbeelding positieve transformatie teweegbrengen? In New Metropolis Zuidoost openen we op 28 juni het festival waarbij we kort terugblikken op 40 jaar Roots. We presenteren het festivalthema ‘transformatie’ en enkele sneak previews uit het festivalprogramma.

The magical sounds of two legendary Malian griots. Met Ballaké Sissoko en Habib Koité spelen er twee Malinese supersterren op Amsterdam Roots. Beiden zijn telgen uit de griots families, de muzikanten families uit West-Afrika die muziek en verhalen doorgeven van generatie op generatie. Habib Koité is gitarist en singer songwriter die zijn Malinese roots heeft verrijkt met onder meer blues en flamenco. Ballaké Sissoko is een virtuoos kora speler, uit hetzelfde griot geslacht als de befaamde Toumani Diabaté. Net als Habib Koité incorporeert hij verschillende muzikale invloeden in zijn spel. Rondom de concerten presenteert Sites of Memory korte performances uit de nieuwe voorstelling ‘Returning the Gaze’. A South African former opera singer, he now heads the Dutch Prince Claus Fund and must lead it into the future. So who is this artistic dynamo? A former opera singer, director and conductor, associated with companies in South Africa and internationally, Desando was until recently the CEO of the Arts & Culture Trust in Johannesburg. But how did the young Desando find his way to opera in the final days of Apartheid? And what futures does he see for the fund he now heads?
