Het zijn donkere tijden in Zuid-Afrika. De overwinning op de apartheid heeft niet de verwachte vrede gebracht. Het land wordt geteisterd door criminaliteit en onlusten. De kloof tussen arm en rijk is gigantisch en komt helaas vaak overeen met die tussen zwart en wit. Het beloofde land is, met andere woorden, niet bereikt. Een beloofd land dat je wordt voorgespiegeld, vaak door corrupte machthebbers, maar er  nooit komt: daarnaar verwijst het Zuid-Afrikaanse Sotho-woord Kanana. Het woord lijkt verbazingwekkend veel op Canaan, het Bijbelse land van melk en honing dat aan Mozes werd beloofd. In Via Kanana verkennen Gregory Maqoma en Via Katlehong wegen naar dat beloofde land, dat misschien wel nooit bereikt zal worden maar daarom niet tot wanhoop moet leiden. Niet dat deze voorstelling alleen maar licht en vrolijk is, Maqoma laat ook de wrange werkelijkheid doorschemeren, maar de essentie is een boodschap van hoop voor Zuid-Afrika.

45 pictures by photographers Jürgen Schadeberg (Germany/South Africa) and Louise Gubb (South Africa). Schadeberg featured Mandela in the 50s and 60s when he was working for Drum, an iconic anti-apartheid weekly, as well as in 1994 when the photographer accompanied Mandela to a visit to his former prison cell on Robben Island. As a press photographer Gubb featured Mandela after his release from prison and during his presidency (1994 – 1999).

The exhibition is an initiave by the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

"Mandela100 The Exhibition" celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday by showcasing rarely seen historical images, invaluable archival documents and letters written to Mandela by children of all ages.
