South-African writer, journalist and occasional comedian Marianne Thamm grew up in the heydays of Apartheid, amid Afrikaans neighbours in Pretoria's less salubrious suburbs. Today, she is an outspoken feminist icon and proud mother of two teenagers.

In her book she recounts her unconventional life story with great honesty and humour. Her German father who fought for Hitler and married her Portuguese mother in England, where she was working as a cleaner. Told in her inimitable, frank and funny voice, Marianne's memoirs offers a poignant, often hilarious account of her complex relationship with her parents, her father in particular, and the ever-present ghosts of history. Only after she adopted two black orphan girls, her father distanced himself from his Nazi sympathies. Marianne's story of belonging, love and loss, set against the backdrops of Nazi Germany, Apartheid, and a free South Africa, is deeply affecting, and filled with wisdom and hope.

Marianne Thamm will be interviewed by the renowned Flemish writer Tom Lanoye, who lives in South-Africa most of the year. In his introduction to the Dutch translation De ondraaglijke blankheid van het bestaan, he wrote: 'Nobody but a fantasist could have made up a crazy story like this'.

Bij Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort vindt van 27 januari t/m 6 mei 2018 de groepstentoonstelling Tell Freedom. 15 South African artists plaats. De tentoonstelling presenteert bestaande en nieuwe werken van vijftien jonge kunstenaars uit Zuid-Afrika. In hun werk reflecteren zij kritisch op het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van Zuid-Afrika in een globale context. Kunstenaars: Bronwyn Katz, Neo Matloga, Donna Kukama, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Lerato Shadi, Madeyoulook, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Lebohang Kganye, Ashley Walters, Francois Knoetze, Mawande Ka Zenzile, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Dineo Seshee Bopape en Sabelo Mlangeni. Gastcuratoren: Nkule Mabaso en Manon Braat.

In filmtheater De Lieve Vrouw worden in het kader van 'Tell Freedom' op verschillende data een aantal Zuid-Afrikaanse films vertoond.

Musical globetrotter and top guitarist tells the story of the blues in a musical ‘one-man show’. As a teenager, guitarist Joep Pelt went to the south of the US to learn the blues. He met old heroes, who taught him the typical Delta blues style. Pelt hopelessly fell in love with the blues and decided to dig deeper. In his musical one-man show ‘From Mali to Mississippi’ Joep tells the story of the West African roots of the blues, traveling along the Caribbean slave routes to her birth in the south of the US, only to see her change the history of music forever. With his stories, photos, historical images and of course many songs that he collected along the way, Joep takes you on a special musical adventure.

Vanaf vrijdag 14 april kun je de grootste hedendaagse Pan-Afrikaanse fototentoonstelling genaamd AFROTOPIA bezoeken.

Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van de biënnale is deze tentoonstelling te zien buiten Bamako. De tentoonstelling was eerder te zien tijdens de 11^e editie van de Afrikaanse fotobiënnale in Bamako. Het Afrika Museum voelt zich vereerd deze toonaangevende tentoonstelling te mogen tonen aan het Nederlandse publiek. 

Uit driehonderd inzendingen zijn werken van veertig hedendaagse Afrikaanse fotografen en kunstenaars geselecteerd die geïnspireerd zijn door het thema Afrotopia en de potentiële kracht waarmee Afrika kan bijdragen aan onze gezamenlijke toekomst. Hun werk toont nieuwe inzichten over het verleden, schijnt licht op het heden en biedt nieuwe perspectieven voor de toekomst.
