SHIFTING SPACES | TILTING TIMES
Een gevoel van verbondenheid is als een menselijke basisbehoefte. Het is de behoefte aan een stabiel thuis, onderdak, een gemeenschap en ergens bij te horen. Belonging geeft ons een basis om samen te leven, samen te werken en bij te dragen aan de wereld. Vanuit dit thema geeft Afrovibes dit jaar vorm aan het programma met voorstellingen die een focus hebben op Noord-Afrika en de (Noord)Afrikaanse diaspora in Nederland. Noord-Afrika wordt vaak als ‘niet-Afrikaans’ beschouwd maar als deel van de Arabische wereld. Voelen makers en kunstenaars uit Noord Afrika zich verbonden met het Afrikaanse continent en een Afrikaanse identiteit of juist met een Arabische identiteit? Elk op hun eigen manier onderzoeken de makers dit jaar met hun werk hoe en met wie we ons verbonden voelen. Ze duiken in culturele en politieke debatten over identiteit, diaspora en dekolonisatie. Ze onderzoeken ons verlangen ergens bij te horen, een thuis te hebben.

Let yourself be enchanted by the beautiful and unique exhibition about (de)colonization and its consequences. A Dutch premiere by the Belgian-Congolese artist David Katshiunga. Authenticité drew its inspiration from the book "Dochter van de Decolonisatie / Daughter of Decolonization" by the renowned political scientist Nadia Nsayi. This compelling work takes readers on a profound exploration of the historical relationship between Belgium and the Congo, delving into the lasting repercussions of colonialism. It offers a distinctive perspective that allows us to scrutinize the legacy of colonization and the complex journey of decolonization. Immerse yourself in the captivating world of David Katshiunga's mesmerizing black and white paintings. These artistic masterpieces facilitate a captivating dialogue that transcends time, seamlessly connecting the past with the present. We're delighted to announce that nine (9) remarkable artworks will be on display, with one being unveiled during a special discussion. This particular piece is intricately connected to the discussion's theme and promises to add an enriching dimension to the exhibition.
Tribes - clubnacht

Na een uitverkochte nacht in Paradiso tijdens ADE 2022, slaan Cloud 8 en Ziongate de handen wederom ineen voor de clubnacht TRIBES, een magisch dansritueel. Ziongate is de nieuwe futuristische clubavond gebaseerd op Afrikaanse elektronische riddims. In een wereld waar men overprikkeld is door media, politieke en sociale druk brengt Ziongate een alternatieve toekomst waarin niet het individu maar het collectief centraal staat. De riddims van afrotech, amapiano, gqom en afrohouse leiden naar een plek waar mensen vrij zijn. Sinds 2018 brengt Cloud 8 een verscheidenheid aan dj's, live optredens en kunst samen met hun evenementen in Rotterdam. Geleid door de beste selectie van soulful en deep afrohouse door de internationale artiest Cloud 8 werd al snel hét evenement voor een divers publiek.
Black Achievement Month
De Black Achievement Month wordt jaarlijks in de maand oktober gehouden. Het festival heeft als doel de uitzonderlijke talenten van mensen met Afrikaanse roots in de schijnwerpers te zetten. Met dit jaar onder meer veel programma-onderdelen in diverse Nederlandse steden: Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Almere, Den Haag, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Nijmegen en Middelburg
Thembeka Heidi Sincuba in solo-expositie ‘Ubuhle Bemvelo’
Van 17 september t/m 22 oktober vind je bij Galerie 23 werk van Thembeka Heidi Sincuba in de solo-expositie 'Ubuhle Bemvelo'. Sincuba is een interdisciplinaire kunstenaar die zich beweegt tussen verschillende media en deze ook met elkaar combineert, waaronder schilderen, tekenen, fotografie, video, performance, textiel en installatie. Thembeka Heidi Sincuba is een non-binaire kunstenaar en wetenschapper. Na het behalen van een MFA aan de Goldsmiths University of London heeft Sincuba aanzienlijke internationale tentoonstellingservaring, waarbij hun laatste solotentoonstelling plaatsvond op het National Arts Festival of South Africa. Sincuba’s transdisciplinaire praktijk onderzoekt vluchtigheid, queer theorie en Afrikaanse voorouderlijke kennisstelsels om koloniale en patriarchale manieren van bestaan en weten te verstoren. De naam van de solo-expositie ‘Ubuhle Bemvelo’ betekent letterlijk ‘natuurlijke schoonheid’. Het werk van Sincuba komt voort uit momenten van eenzaamheid. In deze tijd van postkolonialisme en digitalisering wordt het aanraken, naaien en transformeren van gewone materialen tot prachtige objecten een helend proces. Het werk van de kunstenaar’s handen overwint trauma en heeft iets magisch.
UNBREAKABLE - SOWETO SKELETON MOVERS & LLOYDSCOMPANY
'An explosive performance with hope, healing and redemption through Pantsula dance'. In a combination of heartfelt play, a mix between traditional South-African street dance (pantsula) and ‘bone breaking’, Afro house, Amapiano beats, humor and impressive visuals, the Soweto Skeleton Movers from South-Africa will tell their personal stories that put their Unbreakable spirit to the test. Despite many setbacks and bad temptations that cross their path, these dancers are “unbreakable”. What is pantsula? Pantsula is an energetic dance that originated in the South African “townships” in the 1950s and represents a specific way of life and clothing style. Pantsula was used as an expression of resistance during the apartheid era. Unbreakable is a collaboration between Rotterdam choreographer Lloyd Marengo, London theater director Jonzi D and the five explosively energetic dancers of Soweto Skeleton Movers.
