In het najaar van 2022 gingen de artiesten van South African Road Trip in première op het prestigieuze Londense West End. Vanaf oktober 2023 zijn ze terug in Nederland met hun nieuwe voorstelling ROOTS! zo kondigt producent Bos Theaterproducties aan. Het is de vierde voorstelling van South African Road Trip bestaande uit het Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir, een aantal Xhosa zangeressen en Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten. ROOTS! is van 26 oktober 2023 t/m 13 januari 2024 te zien in verschillende Nederlandse theaters. De première is op dinsdag 31 oktober in de Leidse Schouwburg. Kaartverkoop is gestart. ROOTS! zit boordevol muziek die recht uit het hart komt. Het publiek gaat mee op een unieke reis door Zuid-Afrika en wordt ondergedompeld in de rijke tradities van de Xhosa cultuur. De musici en dansers uit Kaapstad vertellen openhartig over het dagelijkse leven en over de geschiedenis van Zuid-Afrika. Wat kregen ze van huis uit mee over religie en tradities? Wat betekent de strijd voor vrijheid in Zuid-Afrika voor hen? En welke verbindende rol speelt muziek in hun cultuur? Traditionals, gespeeld op authentieke instrumenten, worden afgewisseld met nummers als Pata Pata van Miriam Makeba, Fast Car van Tracey Chapman en Here Comes the Sun van The Beatles. Nummers die verrassend genoeg ook onderdeel zijn van onze roots.

Zikethiwe Ngcobo, Chloe White.  Unemployment, poverty, disease and domestic violence are commonplace in the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg. For young mothers, who often have to raise their children alone, survival is a constant struggle, and they barely have time for themselves and their babies. Yet the first 1001 days after conception are crucial to a child’s development. A group of women from the Ububele Home Visiting program, who are themselves also from Alexandra, are working to transform the neighborhood by improving the mental well-being of mothers and their babies. They do so by talking  and offering advice to the mothers. 1001 Days centers on  home visits made by three of the women, Thandiwe, Khosi and Zanele. Building a bond of trust with the young mothers requires attention and sensitivity. They take all the time  needed to hold intimate, often painful conversations—just as the makers themselves take the time to show their exchanges, so it feels as if you are there with the women in the cramped rundown dwellings.

'An explosive performance with hope, healing and redemption through Pantsula dance'. In a combination of heartfelt play, a mix between traditional South-African street dance (pantsula) and ‘bone breaking’, Afro house, Amapiano beats, humor and impressive visuals, the Soweto Skeleton Movers from South-Africa will tell their personal stories that put their Unbreakable spirit to the test. Despite many setbacks and bad temptations that cross their path, these dancers are “unbreakable”. What is pantsula? Pantsula is an energetic dance that originated in the South African “townships” in the 1950s and represents a specific way of life and clothing style. Pantsula was used as an expression of resistance during the apartheid era. Unbreakable is a collaboration between Rotterdam choreographer Lloyd Marengo, London theater director Jonzi D and the five explosively energetic dancers of Soweto Skeleton Movers.

Met de tentoonstelling In Schitterend Licht geeft Wereldmuseum Leiden een platform aan hedendaagse kunst uit Afrika. De tentoonstelling vormt een dynamische dialoog tussen heden en het recente verleden en viert de rijkdom en diversiteit van kunst uit Afrika en de diaspora. Laat je meevoeren in de verschillende leefwerelden van kunstenaars en de manier waarop zij beïnvloed worden door het verleden in het heden. Gastcurator Azu Nwagbogu stelde de tentoonstelling samen door topstukken uit de collectie van het museum aan te vullen met werk van hedendaagse kunstenaars en probeert daarmee antwoorden te geven op de meest urgente vragen van onze tijd.
