Lecture: The social moratorium of youth (on Guinea-Bissau)
Woensdag 12 Februari 2014 13:00 - 14:00
By prof. Henrik Vigh (Denmark): this paper builds on 15 years of fieldwork with the Aguentas, a militia of urban youth from the city of Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau. Contrary to common conceptions of youth, this generational position is not seen as a sought after and positive space of amusement and self-realisation in Bissau. Instead of being a space people seek to be included into it is a position to escape from, experienced as a belittling position of subjugation and servitude. The paper, shows how youth is experienced as a state of social truncation and focuses of the sometimes desperate – and often ill-fated – attempts of young men to move on in life.
Film lectures - The new Moroccan cinema: meet the director
Van Woensdag 05 Februari 2014 - 16:15
t/m Woensdag 19 Maart 2014 - 18:45
The cinema of Morocco has had a revival in recent years: production is increasing, films are selected and win awards in international festivals. This new cinema has become an important aspect of contemporary Moroccan culture and it expresses adequately the ‘imaginaire’ of the country. To get a better grasp on and gain more insight in this, in each of seven lectures a Moroccan film will be viewed at the EYE Film Institute Netherlands. The film will be preceded or followed by a discussion between Moroccan French writers/directors and some other prominent speakers. They all address the contradictions of this time period; the acceleration of progress in juxtaposition with a traditional society.
