Uncut Magazine called Grammy-nominated Mali-based musician Bassekou Kouyaté the Jimi Hendrix of the ngoni, an ancient string instrument often described as the West-African equivalent to the banjo. As his prowess of the ngoni remains strongly rooted in regional traditions, Kouyaté and his mighty ensemble Ngoni Ba defiantly apply Pan-African and Western standards as stepping stones on landmark albums like Jama Ko and Ba Power.

This legendary band was formed in the late 1960's by guitarist Mamady "Djelike" Kouyate and singer Emile Soumah. They made some of the most beloved music of their generation. Now based in New York, Mamady Kouyate has decided to revive The Ambassadors. Every Wednesday night.
