Photo credits: Peer Schouten.  Along the muddy roads and forested rivers snaking through Central Africa, rebels and soldiers, traditional authorities and civil servants, erect roadblocks where they deploy the threat of violence to impose their will on passersby. There are, in fact, so many roadblocks in Central Africa that it is hard to find a road that does not have one. Peer Schouten has mapped over a thousand of them in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic, and South Sudan. In his talk, Schouten will present the main findings of his book Roadblock Politics: the Origins of Violence in Central Africa (Cambridge University Press, 2022), which argues that roadblocks aren’t just a symptom of corruption or state failure but encapsulate a distinct and meaningful form of order-making. The failure to recognise the central role of roadblocks in this region is due to the stubborn myth that political actors, armed or not, behave like aspiring Westphalian states, trying to control as much territory and people as possible. Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. Featuring work by Mohamed Altoum (Sudan), Salih Basheer (Sudan), Kwasi Darko (Ghana), Noncedo Gxekwa (South Africa), Nada Harib (Libya), Yassine Alaoui Ismaili, alias Yoriyas (Morocco), Amina Kadous (Egypt), Tracy Keza (Rwanda), Mahmoud M Khattab (Egypt), Jacques Nkinzingabo (Rwanda), Ayobami Ogungbe (Nigeria), Rijasolo (Madagascar), Fethi Sahraoui (Algeria), Sydelle Willow Smith (South Africa), Martha Tadesse (Ethiopia), and Etinosa Yvonne (Nigeria).

West-Afrika’s meest iconische band bestaat 50 jaar en onderneemt een Europese tournee om dat te vieren! Op 24 februari komt de band terug naar Rotterdam voor opnieuw een concert in LantarenVenster. Eind 2020 bracht het befaamde wereldmuzieklabel World Circuit ter gelegenheid van dit unieke jubileum een vinyl-heruitgave uit van het legendarische album Specialist In All Styles, een tijdloze verzameling van klassieke en dansbare songs die Afro-Cubaanse ritmes mixen met traditionele Afrikaanse muziek in de kenmerkende stijl van de band. Baobab wordt zowel thuis in Senegal als over de hele wereld op handen gedragen en heeft een speciale plaats in de geschiedenis van de Afrikaanse muziek. Hun verhaal begint in de jaren zestig in het hart van de medina van Dakar en strekt zich uit over de hele wereld en tot in de 21e eeuw, met een briljante verzameling van muzikale persoonlijkheden en een unieke mix van Afro-Latijnse stijlen, internationale popmuziek, West-Afrikaanse griot-muziek, en een West-Afrikaanse nachtclubsfeer van zoete en zangerige ritmes. Vanaf 5 februari 2022 presenteert Kunsthal KAdE de tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs’. Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Het zijn de marge van de samenleving en de schaduwkant van de menselijke geest die de wereldberoemde fotograaf en kunstenaar Roger Ballen (Amerikaan, woont en werkt in Johannesburg, Zuid-Afrika) altijd al hebben gefascineerd. Met zijn zwart-wit fotoserie Platteland heeft hij in 1994 internationaal indruk gemaakt. De foto’s toonden de grimmige realiteit van arme witte Zuid-Afrikaners, een groep die ondanks alle privileges gedurende de Apartheid in erbarmelijk omstandigheden leefden. In de loop van zijn carrière start Ballen met het maken van installaties, waarbij hij de macabere realiteit vermengt met decorstukken. Mensen, poppen, ratten en reptielen figureren tegen een achtergrond met tekeningen van primitieve figuren. Met deze uitgesproken ‘Ballenesque stijl’ creëert Ballen zijn eigen universum en is hij uitgegroeid  tot een cultfiguur, juist ook onder de jongere generaties. Dit retrospectief nodigt uit tot dwalen door de psyche van Roger Ballen en doet je afvragen: wat is echt?

John Edmonds (1989, US) is the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2021. Part of this prize is the solo exhibition A Sidelong Glance. In his work, Edmonds examines issues of identity and power from an African-American perspective in an apparently simple yet essentially culturally complex way. The African art objects Edmonds uses in the work have many facets. They function as symbols of traditional African cultural heritage or bearers of meanings of diaspora and memory. No matter what their exact reference is, they function as a means to explore subjects such as displacement and expropriation in contemporary society. Not only does Edmonds broaden the tradition of studio portraiture, but he also thoughtfully claims his place in rewriting the past and anchors it in our current world, where authenticity and identity are fluid.

The exhibition Voëlvry takes its name from the Afrikaans Anti-Apartheid music movement that Kendell Geers was part of in the late 1980’s. Geers played keyboards and tape loops for the underground band KOOS that was featured on the original Voëlvry album that launched a movement that Max du Preez described as a significant movement in every social, political, cultural and musical sense of the word (Vrye Weekblad). Voëlvry translates to ‘Vogelvrij’ in Dutch or ‘Outlaw’ in English. The exhibition invites us to meditate on the question, what does freedom mean in 2021?
Kendell Geers is one of the most renowned artists in Africa. His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Haus der Kunst Munich, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Goodman Gallery, Cape Town and Kunsthalle Stockholm. His works are included in private and institutional collections worldwide, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; SMAK, Ghent, Chicago Art Institute; Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens; and South African National Gallery.
