Promotie van Luka Verrest. Viscerale leishmaniasis (VL) is een verwaarloosde tropische ziekte die wordt veroorzaakt door de Leishmania parasiet. De ontwikkeling van nieuwe behandelopties voor deze levensbedreigende ziekte is hard nodig, vooral in Oost Afrika waar de huidige behandeling bij veel patiënten niet effectief is en het risico heeft op ernstige bijwerkingen. Om het risico op zowel bijwerkingen als onvoldoende effectiviteit te minimaliseren is een juiste blootstelling van het geneesmiddel in de patiënt belangrijk. Om dit te bereiken zijn farmacokinetische studies nodig, waarbij de absorptie, verdeling, metabolisme en excretie van geneesmiddelen in kaart kunnen worden gebracht.
