For the official Launch of BHM 2011, the Drum will interpret the theme Africa Calling! as a gesture of solidarity with the peoples of African descent. In doing so, they will acknowledge and celebrate the struggles, contributions, achievements and the resilience of African people especially in the face of adversity.

Line-up includes writers Kwame Dawes (Ghana), Shailja Patel (Kenya), Lebo Mashile, Myesha Jenkins, Oswald Mtshali (South Africa), Tjawangwa TJ Dema (Botswana) and musicians rapper Didier Awadi (Senegal) & singer Chiwoniso (Zimbabwe). Special guest is Dutch poet, performer and composer Jaap Blonk (Harare and Cape Town). Also panel discussions, seminars, workshops, schools programmes and meetings with local artists.

De Stchting Ifoza en de Gemeente Utrecht organiseren een middag en avond met muziek uit Oost Afrika, Afrikaans eten, dj's, open microfoon, rap, ... . Tijdens dit evenement wordt ook gezondheidsvoorlichting gegeven door de GG & GD Utrecht. De Stichting Ifoza is opgericht in 2011 door een groep vrienden met als enige doel om armoede in Oost-Afrika uit te roeien. De Stichting wil dit bereiken door toegang tot onderwijs te verlenen en te verbeteren.
