The countdown has started for the Arts Alive Festival in September with theatre, music, dance and the annual Jazz on the Lake concert. The festival is back with a full programme traversing the continents from Africa to the Caribbean to the USA, to showcase the diversity and quality artistic offerings for the residents of Joburg. The festival will feature a range of exciting overseas and local artists within literature, poetry, master class workshops, music and dance; a diverse range of music from Jazz to Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Dancehall reggae and traditional rhythms to Kwaito.

Together with the award-winning Nigerian photographer Akintunde Akinleye, anthropologist Dr. Marloes Janson hit the road in the summer of 2013 to map the most important and busiest Nigerian road - the 120-kilometer long Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. While it has failed as the artery linking the north and the south of Nigeria, the highway has succeeded as a stage for the performance of public religiosity to the extent that it can be described as a 'Spiritual Highway'. The convergence of Christian and Muslim elements makes the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway a true crossroads. At this crossroads prayer camps act as road-builders in rendering meaningful the unstable flux of life in megacity Lagos.

Margot Leegwater will defend her PhD thesis Sharing Scarcity: Land Access and Social Relations in Southeast Rwanda at the VU University. Land is a crucial yet scarce resource in Rwanda, where about 90% of the population is engaged in subsistence farming, and access to land is increasingly becoming a source of conflict. This study examines the effects of land-access and land-tenure policies on local community relations, including ethnicity, and land conflicts in post-conflict rural Rwanda. Social relations have been characterized by (ethnic) tensions, mistrust, grief and frustration since the end of the 1990-1994 civil war and the 1994 genocide.

In het koloniale Algerije van de jaren 1940 en 50 deelden moslims en joden lief en leed en speelden er samen chaâbi in de kasba van Algiers.  Chaâbi, dé Algerijnse volksmuziek bij uitstek, is een aanstekelijke mix van muzikale invloeden uit Noord-Afrika, Andalusië en het Midden-Oosten. Door toedoen van de geschiedenis kwam er een bruusk einde aan een eeuwenoude en unieke culturele symbiose.  Maar de droom bleef bestaan en toen filmmaakster Safinez Bousbia een aantal oude muzikanten opzocht ter voorbereiding van haar documentaire ‘El Gusto, The Good Mood’ (2012) werden de legendarische chaâbi-orkesten van weleer nieuw leven in geblazen … ‘Buena Vista Social Club’ maar dan op zijn Algerijns.
