The countdown has started for the Arts Alive Festival in September with theatre, music, dance and the annual Jazz on the Lake concert. The festival is back with a full programme traversing the continents from Africa to the Caribbean to the USA, to showcase the diversity and quality artistic offerings for the residents of Joburg. The festival will feature a range of exciting overseas and local artists within literature, poetry, master class workshops, music and dance; a diverse range of music from Jazz to Afrobeat, Hip Hop, Dancehall reggae and traditional rhythms to Kwaito.

Together with the award-winning Nigerian photographer Akintunde Akinleye, anthropologist Dr. Marloes Janson hit the road in the summer of 2013 to map the most important and busiest Nigerian road - the 120-kilometer long Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. While it has failed as the artery linking the north and the south of Nigeria, the highway has succeeded as a stage for the performance of public religiosity to the extent that it can be described as a 'Spiritual Highway'. The convergence of Christian and Muslim elements makes the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway a true crossroads. At this crossroads prayer camps act as road-builders in rendering meaningful the unstable flux of life in megacity Lagos.

Maar als de spirits komen, dan dansen ze, eten ze, drinken ze.  Dit is het 1e festival in Europa dat de rijke voodoocultuur laat horen en zien. Van West-Afrikaanse afrobeat tot Surinaamse kaseko, van Cubaanse en Amerikaanse jazz tot Haitiaanse mizik rasin; het zijn de voodoogeesten die je laten dansen. Vrijdag: De oorsprong – Afrika, zaterdag een seminar en zondag Voodoo-jazz uit de Cariben.

Cultural heritage has become one of the most eminent expressions of 'national culture'. As critical studies of cultural heritage have pointed out, these dynamics of in- and exclusion are often highly racialised. The symposium '“Black Citizenship”: The Politics of Cultural Heritage Formation in South Africa and the Netherlands' will focus on these processes of racialisation, and their implications for citizenship. Petite Noir, oftewel de in België geboren, in Kaapstad opgegroeide en nu in Londen wonende zanger en producer Yannick Ilunga, is de uitvinder van de term noir wave: een mix van Afrikaanse muziek, R&B, new wave en pop. Dat klinkt dus als iets tussen The xx, TV On The Radio, FKA Twigs en Kanye Wests ‘808 & Heartbreaks’, de plaat die Ilungas leven veranderde. Na enkele gehypete online singles verscheen dit jaar eindelijk zijn debuut-EP ‘The King of Anxiety. In september volgt zijn full-lenght debuut 'La Vie Est Belle / Life Is Beautiful’.
