New Photography, MoMA’s longstanding exhibition series of recent work in photography, returns this fall in an expanded, biannual format. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, New Photography is expanding to 19 artists and artist collectives from 14 countries, and includes works made specifically for this exhibition. Coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, MoMA will also launch an online platform featuring selections from the archive of the New Photography series, including documents and images from the series' 30-year history. The artists included are: Edson Chagas (Angolan, b. 1977)

The Dogon of Mali form one of the visual highlights of West Africa. With the spectacular setting of their villages against the Bandiagara cliff, their iconic mask performances and their ethnographic fame, they form a core attraction in West African culture tourism. But also Dogon daily life is well worth capturing on camera, as is shown in this photo exhibition by Wouter van Beek, the anthropologist who has worked in the Dogon area since 1979. Here the brilliance of Dogon ritual performances is complemented by the visual appeal of their everyday village life.

In deze tweede lange documentaire, openingsfilm van het IDFA 2015, neemt filmmaker Tom Fassaert zijn persoonlijke familiegeschiedenis onder de loep en belicht met name de rol die Marianne Hertz, zijn nu 95-jarige grootmoeder daarin gespeeld heeft. Ooit was zij een beroemd model dat bijvoorbeeld in een damesblad uit de jaren 50 omschreven werd als "mannequin én ideale moeder". Haar dochter en twee zoons, onder wie Fassaerts vader, denken over die tweede kwalificatie heel anders. Al op heel jonge leeftijd belandden de twee broers in een kindertehuis en sindsdien is het nooit meer goed gekomen tussen de twee broers en hun moeder. Dan krijgt Fassaert een uitnodiging van Hertz om haar te komen opzoeken is Zuid-Afrika, waar zij nu woont.

In this Africa Today seminar, Merel van 't Wout, winner Africa Thesis Award 2015, will take a closer look at efforts to promote entrepreneurship as a development strategy. Based on the stories of seamstresses in Bolgatanga (Ghana) she argues that there is a huge discrepancy between the theoretical arguments underlying efforts to advance entrepreneurship among the poor and the everyday realities that people portrayed as “entrepreneurs” are facing on a daily basis. ‘Zandgasten – Zmagria’ gaat over zomervakantie in Marokko, het vaderland en het moederland, patat en pizza, de eerste migrant en het miserabele leven van de Hollandsche slaaf Jan Dekker 300 jaar geleden in Noord Afrika. Een flitsende voorstelling vol snelle wisselingen tussen humor en ernst, klucht en diepgang. Met improvisaties, geschreven dialogen, fragmenten uit brieven en gedichten van de beroemde Palestijnse dichter Mahmoud Darwish en andere ‘Berberse’ dichters zoals Ahmed Ziani. Deze productie is een uniek samenwerkingsverband tussen Nederlandse en Marokkaans-Berberse/Amazigh theatermakers en speelt zowel in Marokko als in Nederland. Nederlands, Marokkaans en Tamazight gesproken.

BKO Quintet bestaat uit muzikanten die hun sporen ruimschoots verdienden in de muziekscene van de Malinese hoofdstad Bamako. Centrale figuur van BKO Quintet is Ibahima Sarr, de meesterdrummer die nog heeft samengewerkt en getoerd met o.a. Oumou Sangaré.  Abdoulaye Koné, zat in de band met Salif Keita. Samen met Nfali Diakaté bespeelt hij de djéli ngoni. Zanger Fassara Sacko stamt uit een geslacht van griots en valt op door zijn indringende stem.  En dan is er nog Aymeric Krol, de enige blanke Europeaan in dit fijne muzikale gezelschap.

In navolging van het succesvolle fotoconcert ‘Zwerven over de Veluwe’ brengt Theater Harderwijk u dit jaar ‘Africa Together’. Ditmaal staat de natuurfotograaf Adri de Visser centraal. Jarenlang maakte hij de meest mooie en unieke natuurfoto’s in Afrika. Een aantal maanden per jaar reisde hij samen met zijn vrouw door de Afrikaanse natuur om net dát ene unieke moment vast te leggen. In november 2012 verliest hij tijdens een overval in Nairobi het licht in zijn ogen én de kracht in zijn lichaam. Met zes kogels overleeft hij de laffe aanslag ternauwernood. Zijn passie voor fotografie en zijn liefde voor Afrika is gebleven. Tijdens deze voorstellingen maakt Adri u deelgenoot van de Afrikaanse natuur met op groot scherm geprojecteerde natuurfoto’s, zijn belevenissen én zijn verhaal. Dit alles wordt omlijst door Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek.

Wachten op de Barbaren is een bijzondere combinatie van theater, dans en een geluidsdecor naar het gelijknamige boek van J.M. Coetzee, die een boek schreef over totalitaire regimes en hun impact op het leven van het individu. Bij een ingedutte grenspost in een uithoek van een Rijk vertegenwoordigt de Magistraat al tientallen jaren met weinig ophef of drama het gezag. Tot de regering op een dag een onderzoek instelt naar dreigende vijanden. Plotseling is politiek niet iets ver weg in de hoofdstad meer. Het leven van de Magistraat, gespeeld door Jan-Paul Buijs, verandert in een rollercoaster. Wachten op de Barbaren is een bijzondere combinatie van theater, dans en een geluidsdecor.
