As social scientists – and especially those active in the field of international development – we are increasingly experiencing pressure to work together closely with societal partners, including private sector organizations. While most social scientists would like to conduct research that has societal relevance and impact, they also realize that the pressure results in several dilemmas: how to balance the pressure to  promote open access of data and publications with pressure from some of the partners not to, how to balance academic freedom with the pressure from some partners to refrain from asking critical questions… This seminar addresses these dilemmas, as well as the issue of social impact assessment of research: how and for whom? PhD defence: Optimizing Soil and Water Management in Dryland Farming Systems in Cabo Verde. PhD candidate: I (Isaurinda) Baptista MSc. Promoter: prof.dr. CJ (Coen) Ritsema & dr. V (Violette) Geissen. Organisation: Wageningen University, Soil Physics and Land Management. This thesis investigated soil and land management techniques for Cabo-Verdean dryland farming to increase the efficiency of rainwater and crop yield, combining traditional and scientific knowledge in a field-based participatory approach. Field experiments were conducted in different agro-ecological zones of Santiago Island to evaluate the effects of water-conservation techniques combined with organic amendments on runoff, erosion, soil nutrients and on crop yield.

Scènes uit het post-apartheidstijdperk in Zuid-Afrika, door Dr. Astrid Van Weyenberg (Universiteit Leiden). In deze lezing staat het toneelstuk Molora (2003) van Yael Farber centraal. Dit is een Zuid-Afrikaanse bewerking van de trilogie Oresteia van Aeschylus. Verbasterde Geschiedenis: Mythologie en Transculturatie in Tertius Kapps Rooiland, door Dr. Hanneke Stuit, Universiteit van Amsterdam. Het toneelstuk Rooiland speelt zich af in een Zuid-Afrikaanse gevangenis waar criminele bendes de dienst uitmaken, in plaats van de geprivatiseerde instituties die de gevangenis beheren. In deze lezing analyseer ik de lotgevallen van de hoofdpersoon Frans, die op het punt staat tot een van de bendes toe te treden.

Lezing Architectuur: Het 'Footsteps along the track project' gaat over de nalatenschap van de Nederlands Zuid-Afrikaanse Spoorweg Maatschappij in Zuid-Afrika. Het gedeelde erfgoed, dat van groot belang was voor het ontstaan van een nieuwe architectonische stijl, wordt momenteel geïdentificeerd, beoordeeld, gedocumenteerd en geïnventariseerd. Architect en onderzoeker Nicholas Clarke zal ons in deze lezing alles vertellen over het doel van dit project en de reis die hij daarvoor recentelijk heeft ondernomen.
