Promovendus: mevrouw MA R.J. Defina. Titel: Events in language and thought; The case of serial verb constructions in Avatime. Overal om ons heen vindt een continue stroom van activiteit plaats. Toch denken en praten we over gebeurtenissen alsof het losse, apartstaande eenheden zijn. Rebecca Defina heeft onderzocht hoe mensen in taalgebruik en denken gebeurtenissen tot eenheden maken en hoe deze eenheden met elkaar samenhangen. Haar focus lag op een specifieke taal – het Avatime, gesproken in Ghana – en op een specifieke syntactische constructie – de seriële werkwoordsconstructie, waarin meerdere werkwoorden samen gebruikt worden.

PhD ceremony: Ms R.P. (Rebecca) Tumwebaze. Increased attention to economic viability towards agriculture has seen commercial poultry farms in East Africa evolve from the previously common small holder/backyard poultry production operations. These poultry farms have however been faced with numerous challenges including high disease prevalence, high mortalities, compromised inputs and lack of relevant information which have largely been attributed to poultry farmers’ inadequate management competence of commercial operations.

In this seminar Vincent Hiribarren will analyse the history of the borders in the region of Borno (Nigeria). By focusing on borderlands known for harbouring Boko Haram terrorists, this seminar will bring a historical dimension to contemporary security issues in the Lake Chad region. Dr Vincent Hiribarren trained as a History and Geography teacher and taught in France, China, Guinea and England. From 2008 to 2012, he undertook a PhD on the history of Borno, Nigeria at the University of Leeds. Please register
