Het Afrika Festival Hertme is een van de meest authentieke festivals van Nederland! In het prachtige, groene Openluchttheater Hertme vindt al sinds 1989 het tweedaagse muziekfestival plaats. Met dit jaar o.a.: Samba Touré wordt door velen beschouwd als de beste gitarist van Mali. Hij komt weer naar Hertme op zondag 3 juli, samen met ngoni-maestro Djimé Sissoko en de geweldige en krachtige Souleymane Kane op percussie. Samen brengen zij traditionele Songhaï muziek ten gehore met zowel akoestische als elektrische nummers. En ook: Bandé-Gamboa. Deze groep bestaat uit muzikanten uit Guinee-Bissau en Kaapverdië en heeft klassieke liedjes uit beide landen opnieuw geïnterpreteerd. Het is een vreugdevolle ontmoeting tussen twee muziekstijlen: de pittige, door accordeons aangedreven funaná van Kaapverdië en de ritmes van de gumbé uit Guinee-Bissau. En verder: Etuk Ubong. Deze getalenteerde trompettist zal het festival afsluiten op zondag 3 juli. Met zijn 13-koppige band brengt hij dampende up-tempo afrobeat rechtsreeks uit Lagos. Hij speelde in Femi Kuti’s band Positive Force, die vaak optrad in de "New Afrika Shrine" in Ikeja. Thuis in Lagos heeft hij zijn eigen podium gelanceerd, "The Truth Village", waar hij drie avonden per week optreedt. Het is het meest productieve podium in de Nigeriaanse hoofdstad sinds Fela Kuti's Shrine.

Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Die dubbelzinnigheid is de kracht van het werk, en maakt het, volgens de jury, levendig en urgent. Gelijktijdig met de tentoonstelling in de Hermitage Amsterdam, toont Matloga zijn werk in de tentoonstelling We just want to be closer in de ABN AMRO Kunstruimte. Deze duotentoonstelling laat werk zien van twee Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars uit verschillende generaties: Singarum J. Moodley (1922-1987) en Neo I. Matloga (1993). De werken tonen een fascinerend gelaagd verhaal over vrijheid en zelfbeschikking tijdens en na de Apartheid. Entoto brengt een hedendaagse interpretatie van Ethiopische funk van de ’60s. Bulderende saxofoons, soulvolle zang en groovende ritmes smelten samen in een energieke performance, terwijl het publiek zich waant op de dansvloer van swingend Addis Ababa!  Vanaf april heeft Entoto Band bijna iedere week een concert! Critici wonden er na het zien van Via Katlehong Dance tijdens Julidans 2018 geen doekjes om: wie naar een show van deze dansgroep uit de Zuid-Afrikaanse townships gaat, krijgt een theaterbeleving die nog lang nazindert.

In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”
The opening of the exhibition exists of a short documentary based on the photo series, an introduction by Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald and a guided tour by Ilvy. Read more on the Born Free website.

Vanaf 5 februari 2022 presenteert Kunsthal KAdE de tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs’. Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. Met 2 kunstenaars uit Afrika. CATPC / Athanas Kindendie (1970, Congo): How do you cope with exploitation, inequality and colonialism? The controversial artist and filmmaker Renzo Martens made this theme his life’s work. In 2010, following his provocative documentaries Episode I (2003) and Episode III: Enjoy Poverty (2008), he became artistic director of the Institute for Human Activities (IHA). The IHA studies the relationship between art and global inequality, and focuses specifically on the exploitation at a palm oil plantation in the Congolese rainforest. Em’kal Eyongakpa (1981, Kɛnyaŋ/Dɛnya) is an artist from Cameroon holding degrees in Plant Biology, Ecology and a residency in Fine Art from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam, where he currently lives and works. Eyongakpa made a name for himself with physical sound works that evoke personal and collectives experiences. He finds inspiration in native art, the relationship between plants and humans, applied mycology (how fungi and moulds grow) and technology. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

‘Island Rhythm Innovator’ in the wake of Césaria Evora. De Kaapverdische multi-instrumentalist Miroca Paris is van oorsprong percussionist, en toerde jaren met Césaria Evora en recent zelfs met Madonna. Sinds een aantal jaren heeft hij de gitaar weer opgepakt. Door zijn ritmische gave talent ontwikkelde hij een geheel eigen, originele gitaarsound: stuwend, speels, verrassend en fris. Sinds Miroca in 2017 zijn eerste soloplaat uitbracht is hij ook met zijn eigen band over de hele wereld te bewonderen geweest. Zijn muziek is het resultaat van jarenlang componeren, arrangeren en opnemen terwijl hij op tour was. Van thuisstad Lissabon tot de VS, Spanje, Nederland, Kaapverdië en Frankrijk: op elke plek waar hij geïnspireerd raakte werd weer een stukje van zijn repertoire geboren.

East Africa's best-kept musical secret: Djibouti’s national radio & television orchestra. Het is één van Oost-Afrika’s best bewaarde muzikale geheimen. Al sinds eind jaren 70 is Groupe RTD de huisband van de nationale radio van Djibouti. Maar hun rauwe hypnotiserende klanken waren tot zeer recent nooit buiten Djibouti te horen. In het kleine Djibouti is de muziekindustrie geheel in handen van de overheid, en tot voor kort kreeg geen enkele buitenlandse partij toestemming om met Djibouti’s artiesten te werken. Groupe RTD bestaat uit Djibouti’s toptalent: sommige bandleden zijn de 60 gepasseerd, het jongste lid is de 20-jarige zangeres Asma Omar. Op Amsterdam Roots brengen zij hun rauwe en unieke geluid zoals dat tot voor kort alleen maar op de Radio in Djibouti te horen was: een mix van Oost-Afrikaanse hypnotiserende synthesizer melodieën, Bollywood zanglijnen, offbeat reggae gitaarlicks en strakke jazz blazers

"Ik ben een Denfari”, zegt Ami Yerewolo over zichzelf, wat in het Bambara betekent: “Ik ben een kind dat niet bang is voor verandering”. Yerewolo is één van de weinige vrouwelijke rappers in haar thuisland Mali, en tart conventies en vooroordelen. Yerewolo rapt over onderwerpen die haar generatiegenoten in Mali aangaan: familie, zelfontplooiing, nationalisme en vrouwenrechten. Bovendien is ze niet bang om te rappen over seksisme en andere vormen van onrechtvaardigheid. Ze creëert beats met geestige, slimme en soms bijtende teksten in een mix van Frans en Bambara.

The story of the African godson of Peter the Great - retold. Saron Tesfahuney maakt theater vanuit Afrikaans perspectief, als broodnodig tegenwicht tegen de eurocentrische blik van de geschiedschrijving. Zij vertelt het verhaal van een jongen uit een adellijke familie uit Centraal Afrika. Hij werd op zijn 8e gekidnapt door de Ottomanen, en in 1704 belandde hij aan het Russische hof. De tsaar werd zijn peetvader en met de naam “Abram Petrovich Gannibal” had hij een succesvolle carrière en werd hij een invloedrijk persoon aan het hof. Vanuit een Afrikaans perspectief vertelt Tesfahuney het verhaal van Abram Petrovich Gannibal opnieuw. Hoe zag zijn leven in Afrika eruit? Saron reconstrueert de verzwegen geschiedenis van zijn afkomst en vaderland, en legt tegelijkertijd bloot hoe we naar onze geschiedenis kijken. What if your mother tongue is forbidden to speak? Theatermaker Sipan Sezgin Tekin groeide op in een Koerdische familie die hun cultuur moest verbergen, net als vele andere Koerden in Turkije. Hierdoor werd hij het Koerdisch nooit helemaal machtig. Toch voelt hij zich sterk verbonden met de taal van zijn familie. Het leidde Sipan tot een persoonlijke zoektocht naar de relatie tussen mensen en taal, de vrijheid om een moedertaal te mogen spreken, en de vrijheid om te bestaan. In zijn voorstelling neemt hij je mee in die reis, en onderzoekt hij samen met het publiek wat er gebeurt wanneer je een taal niet spreekt of begrijpt, maar wel kan zien en voelen. What if… I don’t exist? My body is neither male, nor female. “XX chromosomen vormen een vrouw. XY chromosomen vormen een man. En toen ik vroeg of er ook iets tussenin was, zei de leraar: Nee, dat bestaat niet. Wat als je niet bestaat?” In Nederland zijn 190.000 intersekse mensen. Geboren met een lichaam dat niet voldoet aan de reguliere definitie van man of vrouw. Vaak is over hen gezwegen, ook door henzelf, op advies van artsen: “Het is beter als je tegen niemand zegt wat je hebt”. Zo nestelde er zich een steeds groter geheim in het hoofd van Marleen Hendrickx. Hoe voelt het als je niet mag zijn wie je bent? En wat gebeurt er als je na jarenlang zwijgen toch begint te praten? Zondagavond 3 juli is de Super Nova-stage een walhalla voor liefhebbers van Afrobeats en Amapiano. De muziekstijl Afrobeats, die zijn oorsprong heeft in West-Afrika, is niet meer weg te denken uit de wereldwijde hitlijsten. En ook het gestileerde, minimalistische maar soulvolle geluid van Amapiano, ontstaan in Zuid-Afrika, bestormt met haar unieke geluid inmiddels de internationale hitlijsten. Twee bekende dj’s geven invulling aan dit programma. Waxfiend; een gevestigde naam in de dj-wereld en groot liefhebber en aanjager van dancehall-cultuur en Zuid-Afrikaanse dance-genres in Nederland. Daarnaast dj Ricks, een van de residents op de toonaangevende Afrolosjes party’s en bekend om zijn opzwepende Afro-sound sets.

Divine gospel, tight horns and uplifting rhythms from Ghana. Als twintiger werd Alogte Oho op zijn motorfiets aangereden. Tijdens zijn herstel in het ziekenhuis kreeg hij een openbaring en schreef hij het iconische gospelnummer Mam Yinne Wa (‘God, U hebt me zo lief’). Het werd een enorme hit in de Frafra scene in Noord-Ghana. Max Weissenfeld van Philiphon records zocht de artiest op, wat leidde tot een alom geprezen debuutalbum. Alogte Oho wordt bijgestaan door een krachtig vrouwelijk koor, met de toepasselijke naam Sounds of Joy. Gecombineerd met strakke blazers en vintage keyboards staat deze formatie garant voor een opzwepende live ervaring.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. Met 2 kunstenaars uit Afrika. CATPC / Athanas Kindendie (1970, Congo): How do you cope with exploitation, inequality and colonialism? The controversial artist and filmmaker Renzo Martens made this theme his life’s work. In 2010, following his provocative documentaries Episode I (2003) and Episode III: Enjoy Poverty (2008), he became artistic director of the Institute for Human Activities (IHA). The IHA studies the relationship between art and global inequality, and focuses specifically on the exploitation at a palm oil plantation in the Congolese rainforest. Em’kal Eyongakpa (1981, Kɛnyaŋ/Dɛnya) is an artist from Cameroon holding degrees in Plant Biology, Ecology and a residency in Fine Art from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam, where he currently lives and works. Eyongakpa made a name for himself with physical sound works that evoke personal and collectives experiences. He finds inspiration in native art, the relationship between plants and humans, applied mycology (how fungi and moulds grow) and technology. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Die dubbelzinnigheid is de kracht van het werk, en maakt het, volgens de jury, levendig en urgent. Gelijktijdig met de tentoonstelling in de Hermitage Amsterdam, toont Matloga zijn werk in de tentoonstelling We just want to be closer in de ABN AMRO Kunstruimte. Deze duotentoonstelling laat werk zien van twee Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars uit verschillende generaties: Singarum J. Moodley (1922-1987) en Neo I. Matloga (1993). De werken tonen een fascinerend gelaagd verhaal over vrijheid en zelfbeschikking tijdens en na de Apartheid. In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”

Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. The IHA studies the relationship between art and global inequality, and focuses specifically on the exploitation at a palm oil plantation in the Congolese rainforest. Em’kal Eyongakpa (1981, Kɛnyaŋ/Dɛnya) is an artist from Cameroon holding degrees in Plant Biology, Ecology and a residency in Fine Art from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam, where he currently lives and works. Eyongakpa made a name for himself with physical sound works that evoke personal and collectives experiences. He finds inspiration in native art, the relationship between plants and humans, applied mycology (how fungi and moulds grow) and technology. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

This thesis examines how new technologies, skills and knowledge within the Kenyan agricultural sector can include marginalised people such as those with minimal resources, women or the youth in its benefits and processes. We find that different actors such as the state, private business enterprises or universities have different interpretations of what social inclusion means and what solutions should be adopted. Additionally, social inclusion remains a rhetoric among these different actors since concrete steps to ensure legitimate inclusion in agricultural innovation remain largely lacking. We recommend that for social inclusion to be realised, holistic methods that take into account different levels and types of inclusion are needed. Such methods include the use knowledge of groups of actors that are targeted with such interventions on what constitutes a socially inclusive innovation process.

Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Die dubbelzinnigheid is de kracht van het werk, en maakt het, volgens de jury, levendig en urgent. Gelijktijdig met de tentoonstelling in de Hermitage Amsterdam, toont Matloga zijn werk in de tentoonstelling We just want to be closer in de ABN AMRO Kunstruimte. Deze duotentoonstelling laat werk zien van twee Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars uit verschillende generaties: Singarum J. Moodley (1922-1987) en Neo I. Matloga (1993). In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”

Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape. Through the lenses of 16 photographers from 11 countries, nine men and seven women, this collection connects a range of views on identity, daily life, traditions and change. The APJD members share their reflections on identity, from explorations of gender in Maputo, Mozambique to reviving Amazigh heritage in rural Libya. Moments of everyday life are highlighted to provide more nuanced views and confront stereotypes, from contrasts in Casablanca, Morocco to youth and social landscapes in Algiers, Algeria. The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. Antibioticaresistentie (AMR) groeit in een alarmerend tempo en is door de WHO aangemerkt als één van de top tien bedreigingen voor de wereldwijde gezondheid. AMR is ernstiger in lage- en middeninkomenslanden vanwege ongecontroleerde toegang en gebruik van antibiotica. Uit dit promotieonderzoek bleek dat ongecontroleerd antibioticagebruik hoog is in rurale gemeenschappen in Ghana. Antibiotica worden makkelijk zonder recept verkregen vanwege omgevingsfactoren zoals verwachte voordelen van antibiotica, wachttijden bij gezondheidscentra, financiële beperkingen en lange afstand tot ziekenhuizen en andere medische instellingen. Andere factoren zijn onder meer het verstrekken van antibiotica door medicijnverkopers voor financieel gewin, zwakke handhaving van regelgeving, gebrek aan kennis over antibiotica en identificatie van antibiotica met kleuren die verwarrend lijken te zijn. De  bevindingen van dit proefschrift leveren een belangrijke kennis die bijdragen aan het ontwerp van interventies om het antibioticagebruik in landelijke omgevingen in Ghana en LMIC te verbeteren.

De Nigeriaanse Tiwa Savage begon haar carrière als achtergrondzangeres van onder andere George Michael, maar heeft inmiddels al twee albums en samenwerkingen met onder andere Eminem en Beyoncé op haar naam staan. De draagwijdte van muziek uit Afrika is niet te onderschatten en lijkt alleen maar actueler en invloedrijker te worden in alle stijlen, luister maar naar de nieuwe platen van Stromae of de Nederlandse band Bruut!. Mert dit jaar veel Afrikaanse musici waaronder Fatoumata Diawara. Vonden de meeste internationale Afrikaanse acts eerst vooral via Europa hun weg, doordat musici daar gingen wonen of zakelijk werden vertegenwoordigd, nu komt de interessantste en succesvolste muziek dankzij de digitale revolutie rechtstreeks van het continent. Artiesten als Burna Boy en WizKid veroveren vanuit thuisland Nigeria de hele wereld, inclusief de Verenigde Staten. Op NN North Sea Jazz is de Nigeriaanse pop sterk vertegenwoordigd met zangeressen Tiwa Savage en Tems, bij wie je in de kosmopolitische sound duidelijk Afrikaanse elementen herkent zoals de typerende klank van de percussie (let op de balafon!).
Ook Afrikaanse jazzmusici worden structureel opgepikt door de media en de muziekscene. Zo is Nduduzo Makhatini de eerste Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikant die getekend is door het legendarische jazzlabel Blue Note Records. De wiegende ritmes en karakteristieke blazers uit zuidelijk Afrika hoor je op verschillende manieren bij hem terug, net zoals bij alleseter en toetsenist Bokani Dyer die BBC Radio-dj Gilles Peterson tot zijn fans kan rekenen en bij trombonist Malcolm Jiyane, wiens album door The Guardian werd verkozen tot het beste van vorig jaar. Zangeres Zoë Modiga uit Zuid-Afrika valt op met haar sterke persoonlijkheid en voor liefhebbers van de basgitaar is Alune Wade uit Senegal niet te missen.

The visible impact of climate change in Madagascar and Zanzibar is underlined, and we’re also given insight into political and social change, including the 2019 protests in Khartoum, Sudan and the coping mechanisms of those who have survived terrorism in Nigeria. Stories of love and families feature strongly, from couples in Cape Town, South Africa, to the value of community in Gondar, Ethiopia. This exhibition was created in partnership with the National Museum of World Cultures to celebrate a new generation of photographers who are redefining what should be seen, through the stories that matter to them. Met 2 kunstenaars uit Afrika. CATPC / Athanas Kindendie (1970, Congo): How do you cope with exploitation, inequality and colonialism? The controversial artist and filmmaker Renzo Martens made this theme his life’s work. In 2010, following his provocative documentaries Episode I (2003) and Episode III: Enjoy Poverty (2008), he became artistic director of the Institute for Human Activities (IHA). The IHA studies the relationship between art and global inequality, and focuses specifically on the exploitation at a palm oil plantation in the Congolese rainforest. Em’kal Eyongakpa (1981, Kɛnyaŋ/Dɛnya) is an artist from Cameroon holding degrees in Plant Biology, Ecology and a residency in Fine Art from the Rijksakademie Amsterdam, where he currently lives and works. Eyongakpa made a name for himself with physical sound works that evoke personal and collectives experiences. He finds inspiration in native art, the relationship between plants and humans, applied mycology (how fungi and moulds grow) and technology. The first-ever museum exhibition of the young and exceptionally talented South African photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa. Different stories intertwine in a moving oeuvre that can be seen as an autobiographical narrative, founded on the search for origins and identity. Sobekwa uses various techniques and media to support his stories, without losing his characteristic visual language. He effortlessly alternates between black and white and colour, digital and analogue, stills and moving images. In Umkhondo. Tracing Memory Lindokuhle Sobekwa (Johannesburg, 1995) combines existing and new work in order to trace the thematic lines that run through his photographs. His family, his ancestors, and the landscape in which they live on are recurring themes in his oeuvre and form part of Sobekwa’s search for explanations for past events. His moving and intimate work directs the gaze towards his immediate surroundings, to his own identity and to the related larger issues at play in South African society.

The South African photographer Sabelo Mlangeni (1980, Driefontein, South Africa), known for his documentary work on generally overlooked groups and cultures, shows a selection of a remarkable archive of wedding photographs for the first time. The exhibition Isivumelwano is an ode to love and community, offering a glimpse into intimate, underexposed South African marriage ceremonies. The weddings and accompanying festivities that Mlangeni has documented as a ‘cameraman’ since 1997, offer an inspiring counterbalance to the stereotypical white wedding. 70 Moving, hand-printed black and white and colour photographs with a poetic, almost mythical quality. For nearly 30 years Sabelo Mlangeni – well known for projects such as Invisible Women, and earlier on show in Huis Marseille in the exhibitions Recent Histories (2019) and Apartheid & After (2014) – has photographed marriages in South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland. The exhibition Isivumelwano is the first to present a large selection of this extensive photographic archive. The photographer captures a wide variety of rituals, traditions and celebrations in intimate images, magnifying ‘the systems we exist in (and against)’. The exhibition was created in collaboration with blank projects in Cape Town.

Neo Matloga (Mamaila, Zuid-Afrika, 1993) maakt met foto’s, verf, inkt en houtskool monochrome ‘collageschilderijen’, waarmee hij een inkijkje geeft in het alledaagse leven in Zuid-Afrika. Vaak zijn het vrolijke taferelen vol liefde en geborgenheid die zich afspelen in een huiselijke omgeving en worden bevolkt door mensen van kleur. Zo creëert hij niet alleen een wereld waarin hij zich thuis voelt, maar ook één die hij mist in de kunst. Voor de tentoonstelling along came your eyes maakte Matloga zeven nieuwe werken, waarin hij zijn figuren mee naar buiten neemt. Ze liggen op het strand, vermaken zich in een zwembad of kaarten in een café. En terwijl de ogen van de figuren zich direct op de bezoeker richten, staan hun hoofden consequent en profil. Zo leidt Matloga de blik van zijn figuren tot ver buiten het doek, maar laat hij hen gelijktijdig een dialoog voeren met de kijker. Met de poëtische titel along came your eyes spreekt de kunstenaar beiden aan. Matloga weet, zonder een eenduidige boodschap en met een sterke nadruk op intermenselijke relaties, diepere maatschappelijke en politieke lagen aan te boren. Enerzijds benadrukt het werk de Black Joy die zelden wordt getoond, anderzijds roepen de vrolijke scènes vragen op over apartheid en racisme. Die dubbelzinnigheid is de kracht van het werk, en maakt het, volgens de jury, levendig en urgent. Gelijktijdig met de tentoonstelling in de Hermitage Amsterdam, toont Matloga zijn werk in de tentoonstelling We just want to be closer in de ABN AMRO Kunstruimte. Deze duotentoonstelling laat werk zien van twee Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaars uit verschillende generaties: Singarum J. Moodley (1922-1987) en Neo I. Matloga (1993). De werken tonen een fascinerend gelaagd verhaal over vrijheid en zelfbeschikking tijdens en na de Apartheid. Te bezichtigen van 11 mei t/m 30 september 2022 in het hoofdkantoor van ABN AMRO (Gustav Mahlerlaan 10, Amsterdam).

Entoto brengt een hedendaagse interpretatie van Ethiopische funk van de ’60s. In 1994 South Africa held its first inclusive elections. These brought an end to decades of white minority rule. A new constitution gave all South Africans equal rights. As the first black president, Nelson Mandela focused on reconciliation and hope for the future. It would be up to the young generation to make his dream of a rainbow nation come true. During her work in South Africa, photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien became intrigued by these born-frees, born after the end of apartheid. She portrays them in her own, personal and sometimes intimate style. “There is equality on paper now, but many still experience the consequences of apartheid.”

De draagwijdte van muziek uit Afrika is niet te onderschatten en lijkt alleen maar actueler en invloedrijker te worden in alle stijlen, luister maar naar de nieuwe platen van Stromae of de Nederlandse band Bruut!. Mert dit jaar veel Afrikaanse musici waaronder Fatoumata Diawara. Vonden de meeste internationale Afrikaanse acts eerst vooral via Europa hun weg, doordat musici daar gingen wonen of zakelijk werden vertegenwoordigd, nu komt de interessantste en succesvolste muziek dankzij de digitale revolutie rechtstreeks van het continent. Artiesten als Burna Boy en WizKid veroveren vanuit thuisland Nigeria de hele wereld, inclusief de Verenigde Staten. Op NN North Sea Jazz is de Nigeriaanse pop sterk vertegenwoordigd met zangeressen Tiwa Savage en Tems, bij wie je in de kosmopolitische sound duidelijk Afrikaanse elementen herkent zoals de typerende klank van de percussie (let op de balafon!).
Ook Afrikaanse jazzmusici worden structureel opgepikt door de media en de muziekscene. Zo is Nduduzo Makhatini de eerste Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikant die getekend is door het legendarische jazzlabel Blue Note Records. De wiegende ritmes en karakteristieke blazers uit zuidelijk Afrika hoor je op verschillende manieren bij hem terug, net zoals bij alleseter en toetsenist Bokani Dyer die BBC Radio-dj Gilles Peterson tot zijn fans kan rekenen en bij trombonist Malcolm Jiyane, wiens album door The Guardian werd verkozen tot het beste van vorig jaar. Zangeres Zoë Modiga uit Zuid-Afrika valt op met haar sterke persoonlijkheid en voor liefhebbers van de basgitaar is Alune Wade uit Senegal niet te missen.

Vanaf 5 februari 2022 presenteert Kunsthal KAdE de tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs’. Twaalf hedendaagse kunstenaars (waaronder de Zuid-Afrikaanse Simphiwe Ndzube) worden uitgenodigd te reflecteren op het utopische ideaal van een maakbare wereld, binnen een wereld die allesbehalve maakbaar blijkt. In 2022 is het 150 jaar geleden dat Piet Mondriaan in Amersfoort geboren werd. De tentoonstelling ‘Schurend Paradijs‘ start vanuit zijn zoektocht naar een ‘Aards Paradijs’: een modernistische droom van een maakbare wereld op basis van vorm en stijl, waarin de mensen vanuit vrijheid naar het ware, goede en schone streven. In de hedendaagse kunst lijkt het ideaal van een maakbare wereld naar de achtergrond verdwenen. In plaats daarvan is er reflectie op de wereld en maatschappij. Honderd jaar na Mondriaans droom lijkt onze wereld namelijk allesbehalve een paradijs. Klimaatverandering, milieuvervuiling, virussen en onderlinge spanning zijn voelbare dreigingen. In plaats van dat kunstenaars ons een na te streven utopie voorspiegelen, proberen zij juist de huidige staat van zijn te analyseren, en de toeschouwer door middel van een ervaring te wijzen op de realiteit waarin wij leven. Heeft het nog zin te dromen over een ‘Aards Paradijs’? Hoe ziet zo'n paradijs er, met de realiteitszin van vandaag, uit? Voor het eerst wordt ook gebruik gemaakt van een tweede tentoonstellingslocatie: de Elleboogkerk in Amersfoort, op loopafstand van Kunsthal KAdE.

Offering reimagined visual narratives from across the African continent, this exhibition showcases the work of visual storytellers selected from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). At the core of the APJD is the mission to share refreshing and diverse stories told by photographers often overlooked by the global media industry—stories that are not widely seen in the current media landscape.
