The 1976-1992 civil war which opposed the Government of Frelimo and the Renamo guerrillas (among other actors) is a central event in the history of Mozambique. Aiming to open up a new era of studies of the war, this book re-evaluates this period from a number of different local perspectives in an attempt to better understand the history, complexity and multiple dynamics of the armed conflict. Focusing at local level on either a province or a single village, the authors analyse the conflict as a "total social phenomena" involving all elements of society and impacting on every aspect of life across the country. The chapters examine Frelimo and Renamo as well as private, popular and state militias, the Catholic Church, NGOs and traders. Drawing on previously unexamined sources such as local and provincial state archives, religious archives, the guerrilla's own documentation and interviews, the authors uncover alternative dimensions of the civil war. The book thus enables a deeper understanding of the conflict and its actors as well as offering an explanatory framework for understanding peacemaking, the nature of contemporary politics, and the current conflict in the country. In het kader van Internationale Vrouwendag praten we met vrouwen aan de top over hun positie en identiteit en hoe zij voorbij stereotypes en beeldvorming de ruimte vinden om zichzelf te zijn. Code-switching, het aanpassen van ons haar, outfit en gedrag aan onze omgeving, doen we immers allemaal. Maar hebben zwarte vrouwen dezelfde ruimte als witte vrouwen? Andrew Makkinga (Kampala, Oeganda 1982) gaat met wereldvrouwen Chandra Arthur en Harriette Verwey in gesprek over hun keuzes, aanpak en dilemma’s.

The EU migration deals with Africa are a humanitarian intervention to curb unregulated migration to Western Europe, on the level of international politics. However, the danger of political incentives is that they impose a misrecognition of the actual socio-political economic conditions of the immigrants for whom these deals have been made. This lecture will examine the socio-political and economic implications of these deals. How have they been contested, recognised or even legitimated within the affected countries and beyond? What are the benefits, challenges and fallacies of these deals? Are there ways in which the political deals could be transformed to embody moral and ethical imperatives that could be contingent and yet universalised? This lecture is organised in connection with the exhibition I Believe | the World in a Suburb, which opens on 16 March at Centre Ceramique, Maastricht.

In 1994 vond in Rwanda de genocide plaats. Waar staat het land 25 jaar later? Welke balans kan het regime van president Kagame voorleggen? Voor de enen is Rwanda een toonbeeld van wederopbouw en ontwikkeling, voor de anderen een gewelddadige dictatuur. Tegenstrijdige berichten, een gepolariseerd debat. Het Zuidcafé wil hierin nuance aanbrengen met twee kenners. Prof. An Ansoms (UCL) doet al meer dan 15 jaar onderzoek naar de levenssituatie van de Rwandezen. Ze gaat in op wat de economische situatie nu concreet betekent voor de mensen. Wat verandert er? Voor wie? Hoe duurzaam is de situatie? Laurien Ntezimana (oprichter van AMI, UPABP, UPA) werkt al meer dan 30 jaar mee aan verzoening in zijn land. Hoe omgaan met elkaar na een burgeroorlog en genocide? Hoe is het 25 jaar later gesteld met de verdeeldheid en de spanningen? Guy Poppe leidt de avond in. Als VRT-journalist reisde hij de voorbije 40 jaar regelmatig naar de regio. Hij modereert het gesprek tussen sprekers en publiek.  Het Zuidcafé is een initiatief van Oxfam-Wereldwinkels, 11.11.11 en Broederlijk Delen i.s.m. Mo*Magazine en De Roma en met de financiële steun van de Provincie Antwerpen.

The formation in 1929 of the United Africa Company (UAC) was a watershed in business-government relations in British West Africa. Not only did its emergence upset the balance of power among commercial firms, it also transformed business-government relations in the region. This seminar, based on correspondence and confidential minutes between officials and the UAC, examines dimensions and repercussions of this fraught relationship, which rapidly deteriorated between 1929 and 1939. The relationship turned on an attempt by the UAC to absorb surviving trading, shipping and banking firms to create a mega-firm in 1929/30, and a further attempt to exploit its monopoly of trade, leading to the Produce Pool Crisis of 1938.
This seminar contributes to the understanding of business-government relations through the pressure group politics of a hegemonic firm driven by business empire builders, Sir Robert Cohen and Viscount Trenchard, and the countervailing pressure of a disparate coalition. It also provides striking parallels between the pressure group activities of Elder Dempster in shipping and UAC in the merchandise trade sector. Please register
