Studium Generale - Experiences of a Rwandan Human Rights Defender
Maandag 21 November 2022 20:00 - 21:45
Due to circumstances, the speaker for this lecture had to go back to Rwanda. We are working on getting this lecture online via Zoom. You can make your reservation here as usual. We will inform you if we switch to online and send you the Zoom-link.
An investigative journalist in Rwanda will share his experiences of exposing human rights violations, corruption and empowering communities. Discover how investigative, data, undercover and open-source investigative journalism is used in the fight against corruption and human rights abuses. Besides engaging the next generation of Rwandan journalists, tonight’s speaker is also a petitioner on laws that hinder the press and freedom of expression in Rwanda. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

Promotie Silas U. Nsanzumuhire: "Strategic Mechanisms for stimulating Academia-Industry interactions in Rwanda"
Donderdag 24 November 2022 10:00
Promotor: Prof. dr. Wim Groot. Co-promotor: Dr. S. Cabus, KU Leuven.

PhD defence: Economic development and sustainable resource use in Africa
Vrijdag 25 November 2022 13:30 - 15:00
PhD candidate: M (Mandy) Malan MSc. Promotor: prof.dr.ir. EH (Erwin) Bulte. Co-promotor: dr.ir. MJ (Maarten) Voors. Organisation: Wageningen University, Development Economics. At the beginning of the 21st century, humanity is facing the complex challenge of simultaneously protecting the environment and combatting climate change whilst also improving the lives of poverty-stricken people. Yet, there is little known about whether and under what circumstances economic development and environmental protection can go hand in hand. Moreover, the private sector is playing a larger role in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but research on how such interventions operate is scarce. To help bridge these knowledge gaps, this thesis studies a range of private sector and traditional aid interventions that aim to improve environmental and economic outcomes in African countries.
