This seminar explores how a movement originating in South Asia could appeal to a West-African Muslim population, particularly women and youth, to such an extent that ‘converts’ have been willing to abandon their youthful pursuits and transgress generational and gender boundaries for a life devoted to God. Tracing the biographical narratives of five Gambian Tablighis, the book the seminar is based on provides an understanding of the ambiguities and contradictions young people are being confronted with in their (re)negotiation of Muslim identity.
