In deze tweede lange documentaire, openingsfilm van het IDFA 2015, neemt filmmaker Tom Fassaert zijn persoonlijke familiegeschiedenis onder de loep en belicht met name de rol die Marianne Hertz, zijn nu 95-jarige grootmoeder daarin gespeeld heeft. Ooit was zij een beroemd model dat bijvoorbeeld in een damesblad uit de jaren 50 omschreven werd als "mannequin én ideale moeder". Haar dochter en twee zoons, onder wie Fassaerts vader, denken over die tweede kwalificatie heel anders. Al op heel jonge leeftijd belandden de twee broers in een kindertehuis en sindsdien is het nooit meer goed gekomen tussen de twee broers en hun moeder. The Dogon of Mali form one of the visual highlights of West Africa. With the spectacular setting of their villages against the Bandiagara cliff, their iconic mask performances and their ethnographic fame, they form a core attraction in West African culture tourism. But also Dogon daily life is well worth capturing on camera, as is shown in this photo exhibition by Wouter van Beek, the anthropologist who has worked in the Dogon area since 1979. Here the brilliance of Dogon ritual performances is complemented by the visual appeal of their everyday village life.

Dooh woont en werkt in Douala, Kameroen, en studeerde aan de Conservatoire Municipal des Beaux- Arts in Amiens, Frankrijk. Hij is met name bekend om zijn schilderijen en multi- media werken. Ook werkt hij op doek, papier en verroeste, ijzeren platen waar hij aarde, verf, klei, hout en krijt op verwerkt. Coetzee, die een boek schreef over totalitaire regimes en hun impact op het leven van het individu. Bij een ingedutte grenspost in een uithoek van een Rijk vertegenwoordigt de Magistraat al tientallen jaren met weinig ophef of drama het gezag. Tot de regering op een dag een onderzoek instelt naar dreigende vijanden. Plotseling is politiek niet iets ver weg in de hoofdstad meer. ‘What about Africa?’ provides an overview of the work of 14 contemporary African artists. Most of them have never exhibited in the Netherlands before. They differ in age, in discipline, in method and also in subject matter. A number of them live and work in Europe, others divide their time between Europe and Africa or live and work in their homeland. The combination of all these factors makes ‘What about Africa?’ a surprising and intriguing presentation. A special edition of the Witteveen Magazine will be published for the exhibition. This edition will be entirely devoted to ‘What about Africa?” with an introduction and (visual) information about the participating artists and their work.

Mulata Astatke is een Ethiopische muzikant en arrangeur. Hij werd geboren in 1943 in het westen van Ethiopië en studeerde aan conservatoria in Londen, New York en Boston. Hij speelde met de groten der aarde, onder wie Duke Ellington. Na vele omzwervingen keerde hij terug naar Ethiopië waar hij zijn opgedane muzikale kennis van jazz, funk en latin combineerde met traditionele Ethiopische muziek.

However, this did not equate to an on-the-ground presence of colonial authority capable of affecting the destiny and daily lives of people. Prof. Jan-Bart Gewald's work, as published in Forged in the Great War: People, transport, and labour, the establishment of colonial rule in Zambia, 1890 – 1920 (Leiden, 2015) indicates that the establishment of effective colonial rule in Northern Rhodesia only came about on account of the unique conditions that developed in the First World War (1914-1918); conditions that led to the massive application of human labour, obtained through the intercedence of Chiefs and Headmen in exchange for goods and money. Portret van het indrukwekkende werk en leven van de internationaal gelauwerde Congolese gynaecoloog Denis Mukwege. Onlangs ontving hij de prestigieuze Sacharov-prijs voor de Vrijheid van Denken, voor zijn inzet in de strijd tegen seksueel geweld. Mukwege hielp in zestien jaar meer dan veertigduizend vrouwen.

In deze tweede lange documentaire, openingsfilm van het IDFA 2015, neemt filmmaker Tom Fassaert zijn persoonlijke familiegeschiedenis onder de loep en belicht met name de rol die Marianne Hertz, zijn nu 95-jarige grootmoeder daarin gespeeld heeft. Ooit was zij een beroemd model dat bijvoorbeeld in een damesblad uit de jaren 50 omschreven werd als "mannequin én ideale moeder". Haar dochter en twee zoons, onder wie Fassaerts vader, denken over die tweede kwalificatie heel anders. Al op heel jonge leeftijd belandden de twee broers in een kindertehuis en sindsdien is het nooit meer goed gekomen tussen de twee broers en hun moeder. Dan krijgt Fassaert een uitnodiging van Hertz om haar te komen opzoeken is Zuid-Afrika, waar zij nu woont.

Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is er weer, alweer de 45e editie, met ook films uit en over Afrika. Ook dit jaar weer de meeste films over Afrika, die elders zijn gemaakt.

New Photography, MoMA’s longstanding exhibition series of recent work in photography, returns this fall in an expanded, biannual format. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, New Photography is expanding to 19 artists and artist collectives from 14 countries, and includes works made specifically for this exhibition. Coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, MoMA will also launch an online platform featuring selections from the archive of the New Photography series, including documents and images from the series' 30-year history. The artists included are: Edson Chagas (Angolan, b. 1977)

De dansers van het Internationaal Danstheater weten verhalen op een luchtige en speelse manier te vertellen met dans. Deze voorstelling draait om Kymani, die al vroeg kennis maakt met allerlei soorten muziek: Australische, Aziatische, Ierse en Indonesische. Maar als geadopteerd jongetje voelt hij zich nergens bij thuis. Tot hij Afrikaanse muziek hoort. Hij leert al snel alles over de Afrikaanse drums en leert er zijn eigen verhaal mee te vertellen.

The Dogon of Mali form one of the visual highlights of West Africa. With the spectacular setting of their villages against the Bandiagara cliff, their iconic mask performances and their ethnographic fame, they form a core attraction in West African culture tourism. But also Dogon daily life is well worth capturing on camera, as is shown in this photo exhibition by Wouter van Beek, the anthropologist who has worked in the Dogon area since 1979. Here the brilliance of Dogon ritual performances is complemented by the visual appeal of their everyday village life.

Symposium that forms part of a workshop with colleagues from the Government of Zanzibar and the Municipality of Amsterdam. The key note lecturers are: Mr. Karim Hendili from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. He will expand on the relevance of the Historic Urban Landscape approach. Prof. Gabri van Tussenbroek from the University of Amsterdam holds the chair of Urban Identity and Monuments. Next to the case of heritage based urban regeneration in Zanzibar, which is the focal case, also cases from Morocco, Benin, Chad and Mozambique will be presented by respectively Abderrahim Kassou, Franck Houndegla and Silje Elroy Sollien.

Galerie 23 start het nieuwe jaar met een expositie van Joël Mpah Dooh (1956). Dooh woont en werkt in Douala, Kameroen, en studeerde aan de Conservatoire Municipal des Beaux- Arts in Amiens, Frankrijk. Hij is met name bekend om zijn schilderijen en multi- media werken. Ook werkt hij op doek, papier en verroeste, ijzeren platen waar hij aarde, verf, klei, hout en krijt op verwerkt. In deze tentoonstelling laat hij enkele tientallen kleine tekeningen zien, 3 enorme werken op papier en een enkel werk op metaal.

Wachten op de Barbaren is een bijzondere combinatie van theater, dans en een geluidsdecor naar het gelijknamige boek van J.M. Coetzee, die een boek schreef over totalitaire regimes en hun impact op het leven van het individu. Bij een ingedutte grenspost in een uithoek van een Rijk vertegenwoordigt de Magistraat al tientallen jaren met weinig ophef of drama het gezag. Tot de regering op een dag een onderzoek instelt naar dreigende vijanden. Plotseling is politiek niet iets ver weg in de hoofdstad meer. Het leven van de Magistraat, gespeeld door Jan-Paul Buijs, verandert in een rollercoaster. Wachten op de Barbaren is een bijzondere combinatie van theater, dans en een geluidsdecor.

Zingen met Boaventura (Bobby) is een uitdaging. Zijn motto: zing op de beat van je hart. Hij is een kei in harmonie, ritme en natuurlijk het overbrengen van het Afrikaanse gevoel. De liedjes gaan over vrijheid, het einde van vrijheid en over het leven bij de mensen thuis. Bobby werkt zonder partituren, maar zingt alles voor. Zo voorkom je dat iedereen op een papiertje zit te turen. Het gaat om een mooie sound. De muziek is in principe vierstemmig en afkomstig uit Zuid-Afrika en de omringende landen.
