Agenda 15 - 21 Juli 2018

Het tienjarig bestaan van THAF wordt op 15 juli groots gevierd in het Haagse Zuiderpark Theater en omgeving. Het festival beleefde hier vorig jaar een van zijn meest succesvolle edities. Met dit jaar onder meer op het hoofdpodium de legendarische Refugee All Stars (Sierra Leone), de Ghanese superster Wiyaala (Ghana), de succesvolle Kameroens-Nederlandse zangeres Ntjam Rosie, de swingende formatie Tabanka uit Cabo Verde, percussie-meester Oke Sene (Senegal) en de gedreven reggae-sound van SoulDia uit Senegal en Amartey, gerust hart een fakkeldrager van de AfroPop-sound in Nederland te noemen.

African Talent Stage

Tijdens de afgelopen negen edities van het The Hague African Festivals hebben veel Haagse amateurgroepen de kans gekrege om zich te laten zien aan een groter publiek. In de afgelopen jaren zijn contacten opgebouwd met diverse amateurbands en andere talenten die een podium zoeken om zich te presenteren.

Afrikaanse markt

Tijdens de 10e editie van The Hague African Festival is er een nog ruimer aanbod van Afrikaanse kunst, sieraden, kleding en nog veel meer. Ga lekker struinen langs de vele marktkramen.

Kinderdorp

Ook het Kinderdorp is weer van de partij. Daar kunnen de allerkleinsten weer volop genieten van verschillende op Afrika gerelateerde activiteiten.

Vanaf vrijdag 14 april kun je de grootste hedendaagse Pan-Afrikaanse fototentoonstelling genaamd AFROTOPIA bezoeken.

Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van de biënnale is deze tentoonstelling te zien buiten Bamako. De tentoonstelling was eerder te zien tijdens de 11^e editie van de Afrikaanse fotobiënnale in Bamako. Het Afrika Museum voelt zich vereerd deze toonaangevende tentoonstelling te mogen tonen aan het Nederlandse publiek. 

Uit driehonderd inzendingen zijn werken van veertig hedendaagse Afrikaanse fotografen en kunstenaars geselecteerd die geïnspireerd zijn door het thema Afrotopia en de potentiële kracht waarmee Afrika kan bijdragen aan onze gezamenlijke toekomst. Hun werk toont nieuwe inzichten over het verleden, schijnt licht op het heden en biedt nieuwe perspectieven voor de toekomst.

Mode is hot in Afrika, maar dé Afrikaanse mode bestaat niet. In verschillende steden bestaan diverse bloeiende modescenes. Van streetwear tot couture en van experimenteel tot meer ingetogen: dragers, makers en kenners tonen er hun identiteit, persoonlijke smaak en achtergrond mee. Vaak gelinkt aan de stad waarin ze wonen. De stad die hen een spiegel voorhoudt. Fashion Cities Africa toont de diversiteit aan mode in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos en Nairobi – door de ogen van 15 lokale experts. In Fashion Cities Africa bekijk je de stedelijke modescenes vanuit het perspectief van lokale ontwerpers, stylisten, shophouders, fotografen en bloggers. Zo nemen broer en zus 2ManySiblings je mee naar de markt in Nairobi, waar ze tweedehands designerkleding kopen om te restylen. Ook vind je in de tentoonstelling creaties van onder meer The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) en het modelabel Maki Oh (Lagos), dat gedragen wordt door onder andere Beyoncé en Michelle Obama. Het Tropenmuseum selecteerde voor deze tentoonstelling Nederlandse experts die hun Afrikaanse roots verwerken in mode: Daily Paper, Karim Adduchi, Lady Africa, Doru Komonoteng Loboka en Nsimba Valene Lontanga. Voor Fashion Cities Africa delen zij hun inspiratie, werkwijze én ontwerpen met de museumbezoeker.

45 pictures by photographers Jürgen Schadeberg (Germany/South Africa) and Louise Gubb (South Africa). Schadeberg featured Mandela in the 50s and 60s when he was working for Drum, an iconic anti-apartheid weekly, as well as in 1994 when the photographer accompanied Mandela to a visit to his former prison cell on Robben Island. As a press photographer Gubb featured Mandela after his release from prison and during his presidency (1994 – 1999).

The exhibition is an initiave by the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

"Mandela100 The Exhibition" celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday by showcasing rarely seen historical images, invaluable archival documents and letters written to Mandela by children of all ages.  Galerie 23 organiseert zondag 24 juni van 14-16u een 'get together' met kunstenares Doctrovée Bansimba (1985). Fons Geerlings en Priscilla Tosari heten u van harte welkom. De titel 'Tchikumbi' verwijst naar een initiatieritueel dat nog steeds gebruikelijk is in het zuiden van Kongo-Brazzaville, het ritueel van de transformatie van jong meisje naar vrouw. Het is de eerste keer dat Bansimba haar kunstwerken toont in Nederland. “Ik adem kunst, ik droom kunst, ik huil kunst, ik dans kunst, ik lach kunst, ik eet kunst, ik zweet kunst......kunst is mijn leven.” Een uitspraak die tekenend is voor deze Kongolese kunstenaar. Om nog meer aspecten van de rijke cultuur van Afrika te kunnen laten zien en het festival een belangrijke plek op de kaart te geven, wil Sankofa in 2018 meer bieden dan het festival alleen.

Veel van de muzikale momenten met bijzondere optredens van nationale en internationale artiesten, woonachtig in Nederland maar vooral overgevlogen uit het kleurrijke Afrikaanse continent. Via de grote expositie 10 jaar The Hague African Festival, die samen met Stichting Topaze georganiseerd wordt, krijgen we een terugblik op de achterliggende tien jaar. Geniet van de rijke cultuur van Afrika en haal veel herinneringen op in het Atrium van het Haagse Stadhuis.

De exposite zal bestaan uit 3 onderdelen:

1. Een fototentoonstelling met prachtige beelden van de afgelopen 10 jaar THAF door onze vaste fotograaf Anneke Ruis. Highlights van muziekanten, publiek en sfeerfoto’s,
2. Een overzicht van alle publicaties en promotie materialen (Look & Feel) van de afgelopen 10 jaar (Posters, flylers en merchandise)
3. Een overzicht van de tentoonstellingen die in de afgelopen 4 jaar, in samenwerking met Stichting Topaze, in het Atrium hebben gestaan. De thema’s waren altijd verbonden met Afrika, zoals “Celebrating African Heroes”.

Maandag 02 juli wordt de tentoonstelling geopend met een receptie.

Artworks MandelaAs part of the 2018 Nelson Mandela Day and Nelson Mandela’s centenary, the UMURAGE Foundation is pleased to present 'We Are The Legacy: Celebrating Nelson Mandela Centenary 2018'. The art exhibition will feature portraits of 100 African legacy makers who, in their own unique way, embody Nelson Mandela’s three key principles – to free yourself, free others and serve every day – and 100 artworks from across the motherland. Featured artists are coming from : Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazaville, Congo DRC, France, Madagascar, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Tchad, Malawi, Togo and Zambia. The UMURAGE Foundation is an international non-profit organisation, head-quartered in Amsterdam, which aims at promoting, supporting, connecting, recognizing and rewarding individuals, organizations, businesses and communities shaping Africa’s collective legacy. Its vision is a world embracing and celebrating Africa’s contributions to humanity’s collective legacy.

In the exhibition Structures of Identity, Foam presents a selection of photographic works from The Walther Collection. Structures of Identity examines how photographers have used portraiture to affirm or challenge social stereotypes constructed around notions of race, gender, class, and nationality. Iconic works by photographers including August Sander, Richard Avedon and J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere are combined with the work of contemporary photographers such as Yto Barrada, Samuel Fosso, Zanele Muholi and Guy Tillim (both from South Africa). Works of vernacular photography, from a range of cultures and historical periods, are also on view. Photographic portraits are more than mementoes of friends and family. They are markers of social identity. Reflecting on the ways that portrait photography has been deployed, Structures of Identity visualises the political and cultural factors that shape individual and collective subjectivities, with a particular focus on the relation between self-representation and social identity.

Catch a glimpse of the life and legacy of Mandela at a debate chaired by BBC presenter Zeinab Badawi, featuring participants who knew him personally.

Those whose lives have been deeply touched through their encounters with Mandela are joined by younger voices from South Africa and the diaspora. The panel discuss the essence of Mandela and how they have been inspired by the story of his life.

Speakers include:

• Thembi Tambo, daughter of Oliver Tambo who was Nelson Mandela’s partner in the first black law firm in South Africa and leader of the ANC in exile (Thembi Tambo has also recently been appointed as South African High Commissioner to London).
• Lord Peter Hain, anti-apartheid activist and former UK cabinet minister.
• Pallo Jordan, former South African cabinet minister.
• Lebeko Matabane, a South African student studying in Scotland.

Mandela Trilogy employs a unique fusion of traditional Xhosa songs, jazz tunes and modern music in honour of one of the world’s most inspiring statesmen. The work begins with Mandela’s teenage years in rural Qunu, culminating in the young man’s initiation into adulthood and his decision to leave his village for the bright lights of Johannesburg. The jazz music of the second act depicts the vibrant life of 1950s Sophiatown as it falls under the shadow of the apartheid security forces. The final act ends with Mandela’s years on Robben Island and his release from prison, encompassing themes of revolution, incarceration, and freedom. Mandela Trilogy made its European premiere at the Wales Millennium Centre in 2012 and has since been performed in Dubai, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

This exhibition explores the life and times of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 – 2013) and marks the centenary of his birth. It provides insight into Mandela’s journey from young freedom fighter to becoming the inspiration for an international movement against South Africa’s violent and oppressive apartheid system, and an emblem of an ongoing struggle to build a more just and equitable world.

The Wanderers Stadium downtown Johannesburg will host the 16th Nelson Mandela Lecture delivered by President Barack Obama. Thousands of people will attend the lecture, an initiative by the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) in collaboration with the Motsepe Foundation.

De tentoonstelling was eerder te zien tijdens de 11^e editie van de Afrikaanse fotobiënnale in Bamako. Het Afrika Museum voelt zich vereerd deze toonaangevende tentoonstelling te mogen tonen aan het Nederlandse publiek. 

Uit driehonderd inzendingen zijn werken van veertig hedendaagse Afrikaanse fotografen en kunstenaars geselecteerd die geïnspireerd zijn door het thema Afrotopia en de potentiële kracht waarmee Afrika kan bijdragen aan onze gezamenlijke toekomst. Hun werk toont nieuwe inzichten over het verleden, schijnt licht op het heden en biedt nieuwe perspectieven voor de toekomst.

Van streetwear tot couture en van experimenteel tot meer ingetogen: dragers, makers en kenners tonen er hun identiteit, persoonlijke smaak en achtergrond mee. Vaak gelinkt aan de stad waarin ze wonen. De stad die hen een spiegel voorhoudt. Fashion Cities Africa toont de diversiteit aan mode in Casablanca, Johannesburg, Lagos en Nairobi – door de ogen van 15 lokale experts. In Fashion Cities Africa bekijk je de stedelijke modescenes vanuit het perspectief van lokale ontwerpers, stylisten, shophouders, fotografen en bloggers. Zo nemen broer en zus 2ManySiblings je mee naar de markt in Nairobi, waar ze tweedehands designerkleding kopen om te restylen. Ook vind je in de tentoonstelling creaties van onder meer The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) en het modelabel Maki Oh (Lagos), dat gedragen wordt door onder andere Beyoncé en Michelle Obama. Het Tropenmuseum selecteerde voor deze tentoonstelling Nederlandse experts die hun Afrikaanse roots verwerken in mode: Daily Paper, Karim Adduchi, Lady Africa, Doru Komonoteng Loboka en Nsimba Valene Lontanga. Voor Fashion Cities Africa delen zij hun inspiratie, werkwijze én ontwerpen met de museumbezoeker.

Mandela Trilogy employs a unique fusion of traditional Xhosa songs, jazz tunes and modern music in honour of one of the world’s most inspiring statesmen. The work begins with Mandela’s teenage years in rural Qunu, culminating in the young man’s initiation into adulthood and his decision to leave his village for the bright lights of Johannesburg. The jazz music of the second act depicts the vibrant life of 1950s Sophiatown as it falls under the shadow of the apartheid security forces. The final act ends with Mandela’s years on Robben Island and his release from prison, encompassing themes of revolution, incarceration, and freedom. Mandela Trilogy made its European premiere at the Wales Millennium Centre in 2012 and has since been performed in Dubai, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Schadeberg featured Mandela in the 50s and 60s when he was working for Drum, an iconic anti-apartheid weekly, as well as in 1994 when the photographer accompanied Mandela to a visit to his former prison cell on Robben Island. As a press photographer Gubb featured Mandela after his release from prison and during his presidency (1994 – 1999).

The exhibition is an initiave by the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

Structures of Identity examines how photographers have used portraiture to affirm or challenge social stereotypes constructed around notions of race, gender, class, and nationality. Iconic works by photographers including August Sander, Richard Avedon and J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere are combined with the work of contemporary photographers such as Yto Barrada, Samuel Fosso, Zanele Muholi and Guy Tillim (both from South Africa). Works of vernacular photography, from a range of cultures and historical periods, are also on view. Photographic portraits are more than mementoes of friends and family. They are markers of social identity. Tijdens de internationale Mandela Dag vindt op Landgoed De Pals de resentatie van Opsoek Naar Ubuntu plaats. Daarin gaat Annette Nobuntu Mul op zoek naar de betekenis van ubuntu, humanisme op zijn Zuid-Afrikaans: ‘ik ben omdat wij zijn.’ Het boek bevat de weerslag van gesprekken met tal van bekende en minder bekende Zuid-Afrikanen. The upgraded Tata Madiba exhibition content and objects are meant to stimulate conversation about his life, struggles and extraordinary contribution to protection of South Africa’s rich biodiversity; but also connect to contemporary issues around conservation and sustainability.  The exhibition also includes the many species named after him and those he and his fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island.  The exhibition includes as its central piece the iMadiba Project which is a participatory art project conceptualized and created by artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel. It is endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation The intention of the installation or micro museum is to facilitate dialogue, memory, reflection and forward thinking. The combination of the Tata Madiba exhibition and the iMadiba Project art installation is therefore an apt marriage to celebrate the centenary of this great statesman Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Zo nemen broer en zus 2ManySiblings je mee naar de markt in Nairobi, waar ze tweedehands designerkleding kopen om te restylen. Ook vind je in de tentoonstelling creaties van onder meer The Sartists (Johannesburg), Said Mahrouf (Casablanca) en het modelabel Maki Oh (Lagos), dat gedragen wordt door onder andere Beyoncé en Michelle Obama. Het Tropenmuseum selecteerde voor deze tentoonstelling Nederlandse experts die hun Afrikaanse roots verwerken in mode: Daily Paper, Karim Adduchi, Lady Africa, Doru Komonoteng Loboka en Nsimba Valene Lontanga. Voor Fashion Cities Africa delen zij hun inspiratie, werkwijze én ontwerpen met de museumbezoeker.

45 pictures by photographers Jürgen Schadeberg (Germany/South Africa) and Louise Gubb (South Africa). Schadeberg featured Mandela in the 50s and 60s when he was working for Drum, an iconic anti-apartheid weekly, as well as in 1994 when the photographer accompanied Mandela to a visit to his former prison cell on Robben Island. As a press photographer Gubb featured Mandela after his release from prison and during his presidency (1994 – 1999).

The exhibition is an initiave by the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

"Mandela100 The Exhibition" celebrates Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday by showcasing rarely seen historical images, invaluable archival documents and letters written to Mandela by children of all ages. This exhibition explores the life and times of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 – 2013) and marks the centenary of his birth. It provides insight into Mandela’s journey from young freedom fighter to becoming the inspiration for an international movement against South Africa’s violent and oppressive apartheid system, and an emblem of an ongoing struggle to build a more just and equitable world.

The upgraded Tata Madiba exhibition content and objects are meant to stimulate conversation about his life, struggles and extraordinary contribution to protection of South Africa’s rich biodiversity; but also connect to contemporary issues around conservation and sustainability.  The exhibition also includes the many species named after him and those he and his fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island.  The exhibition includes as its central piece the iMadiba Project which is a participatory art project conceptualized and created by artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel. It is endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation The intention of the installation or micro museum is to facilitate dialogue, memory, reflection and forward thinking. The combination of the Tata Madiba exhibition and the iMadiba Project art installation is therefore an apt marriage to celebrate the centenary of this great statesman Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

 Galerie 23 organiseert zondag 24 juni van 14-16u een 'get together' met kunstenares Doctrovée Bansimba (1985). Fons Geerlings en Priscilla Tosari heten u van harte welkom. De titel 'Tchikumbi' verwijst naar een initiatieritueel dat nog steeds gebruikelijk is in het zuiden van Kongo-Brazzaville, het ritueel van de transformatie van jong meisje naar vrouw. Het is de eerste keer dat Bansimba haar kunstwerken toont in Nederland. “Ik adem kunst, ik droom kunst, ik huil kunst, ik dans kunst, ik lach kunst, ik eet kunst, ik zweet kunst......kunst is mijn leven.” Een uitspraak die tekenend is voor deze Kongolese kunstenaar. Featured artists are coming from : Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazaville, Congo DRC, France, Madagascar, The Netherlands, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Tchad, Malawi, Togo and Zambia. In the exhibition Structures of Identity, Foam presents a selection of photographic works from The Walther Collection. Structures of Identity examines how photographers have used portraiture to affirm or challenge social stereotypes constructed around notions of race, gender, class, and nationality. Iconic works by photographers including August Sander, Richard Avedon and J.D. ‘Okhai Ojeikere are combined with the work of contemporary photographers such as Yto Barrada, Samuel Fosso, Zanele Muholi and Guy Tillim (both from South Africa). Works of vernacular photography, from a range of cultures and historical periods, are also on view. Photographic portraits are more than mementoes of friends and family. They are markers of social identity. Reflecting on the ways that portrait photography has been deployed, Structures of Identity visualises the political and cultural factors that shape individual and collective subjectivities, with a particular focus on the relation between self-representation and social identity.
