Beautiful in Beaufort West - music documentary about Gert Vlok Nel
Beautiful in Beaufort West - music documentary about Gert Vlok Nel (NL, 2006, 54 min, Afrikaans spoken, Dutch subtitles). Director: Walter Stokman. With: Gert Vlok Nel, Albert Nel and Eida Avenant. Beaufort West is a town in the Great Karoo, the semi-desert between Cape Town and Johannesburg. One of his residents is the South African poet/songwriter Gert Vlok Nel. He was born in 1963, the year that the apartheid regime introduced strict censorship laws and captured Nelson Mandela on Robben Island. Due to his media-shy attitude and his meagre but high-quality production, Vlok Nel has grown into a cult figure.
Walter Stokman visited him in Beaufort West, where he lives with his father, and made a beautiful, atmospheric documentary full of melancholy texts, especially about personal suffering.
