Tropische bossen in Centraal-Afrika behoren tot de gebieden met de hoogste bliksemactiviteit ter wereld, maar we weten nog weinig over de invloed van bliksem op deze ecosystemen. Dit proefschrift onderzoekt hoe bliksem tropische bossen beïnvloedt: van waar bliksem inslaat tot hoe bomen daarop reageren. Het laat zien dat bliksemlittekens op boomstammen vaker voorkomen dan eerder werd gedacht en gebruikt kunnen worden om blikseminslagen te herkennen.

Overheden in de savanne-agro-ecologische zone van West-Afrika en hun internationale partners hebben mineralen meststoffen beschikbaar gesteld aan boeren om de gewasopbrengsten te verbeteren. Onderzoek heeft echter overtuigend aangetoond dat de efficiëntie van de toegepaste meststoffen laag is in Noord-Ghana, wat suggereert dat er andere factoren zijn die het vermogen van gewassen om voedingsstoffen uit toegepaste minerale meststoffen op te nemen en/of te benutten belemmeren.

This lecture examines agrarian change at the conservation frontier in North Kivu (DRC), where armed conflict, environmental governance and market integration intersect. Based on recent qualitative fieldwork, it analyses how rural households navigate insecurity, land scarcity and competing territorial claims while adapting cropping systems and labour organisation.
NVAS Conference: Beyond the Blue. Interdisciplinary Explorations of Water in Africa
Thinking with water provides several new orientations for regional studies, including those focusing on the African continent and its global connections. Centering waterscapes surfaces connections, networks, and concerns that open up new thematic orientations and bring a wide range of urgent matters to the fore, ranging from climate change adaptation to endangered cultural narratives. The volatility of climate change is making the presence and absence of water increasingly problematic, leading to floods and droughts, increasing challenges of water management and its politics. Water ecologies are of crucial importance to human life, livelihoods and landscapes, making it critical to bring together different modes of engaging with new (and old) challenges. This calls for a fresh look at water in connection to Africa.

On Wednesday 23 September 2026 from 1 to 2 pm, Mandipa Ndlovu will defend her dissertation Myth, Memory, and Political Settlements in the City: Compounded Disadvantage and a Path for Plausible Futures at Leiden University. This dissertation interrogates the structural, symbolic, and futures-facing dimensions of urban disadvantage in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city. It argues that the city’s marginalisation is not simply the result of economic decline nor poor governance, but part of a wider “architecture of disadvantage”: a system built over time through colonial legacies, post-independence political settlements, centralised power, militarised governance, patron-client networks, spatial inequality, and entrenched myths about the city.
Multifunctionaliteit van wetlands in het binnenland voor de voedselzekerheid in het op rijst gebaseerde landbouwsysteem van Ivoorkust en Ghana

De wereldwijde stijging van de granenprijzen in 2008 veroorzaakte voedseltekorten en sociale instabiliteit in veel West-Afrikaanse landen. De regeringen reageerden hierop door hun landbouwbeleid te heroriënteren naar het verhogen van de rijstproductie in de binnenvalleien. Het onderzoek richtte zich vooral op het verhogen van de rijstproductie, terwijl er maar weinig aandacht werd besteed aan de vele voordelen van deze wetlands. In dit proefschrift werd onderzocht hoe de multifunctionaliteit van de wetlands in de binnenvalleien bijdraagt aan de voedselzekerheid in de op rijst gebaseerde landbouwstelsels in Ivoorkust en Ghana.
