In veel landen in Afrika trouwen meisjes jong en krijgen vrouwen relatief veel kinderen. Dit heeft grote gevolgen voor hun gezondheid, opleiding en kansen op werk. Opvallend is dat deze patronen blijven bestaan, zelfs wanneer onderwijs en economische omstandigheden verbeteren. Dit proefschrift laat zien dat deze keuzes niet alleen afhangen van inkomen of opleiding, maar ook sterk worden beïnvloed door de sociale omgeving.

High-intensity human activities along protected-area boundaries in the western Greater Serengeti Ecosystem have intensified human–wildlife conflict and prompted the use of fencing as a mitigation measure. This study evaluated a 30-km electric fence designed to protect reintroduced black rhinos and reduce human–elephant conflict (HEC), assessing its ecological and socio-economic impacts.

A central claim in debates on Africa’s shifting global relations is that South–South cooperation, particularly through large-scale infrastructural projects can drive technology and skills transfer. I revisit this assumption in the context of recent global and local shocks and their uneven consequences on the ground. Drawing on ethnographic research in Ethiopia’s Hawassa Special Economic Zone (HSEZ), the study analyzes how multipolar power dynamics, particularly among China, the United States, and Ethiopian state actors are experienced and reinterpreted by local industrial workers.

Dit promotieonderzoek onderzocht waarom jonge kinderen in omgevingen met beperkte middelen vaak ernstig ziek worden en moeite hebben met herstellen, vooral wanneer ze ondervoed zijn. Infecties zoals longontsteking, diarree, malaria en chronische aandoeningen zoals hiv komen veel voor, en ondervoeding verzwakt het lichaam, waardoor een vicieuze cirkel van ziekte ontstaat.
