Agnes Kotoh presenteert in haar studie uitkomsten van een onderzoek naar een ‘multistakeholder problem-solving’ programma (MSPSP). Dit programma heeft als doel het aantal deelnemers aan de nationale ziektekostenverzekering (NHIS) in Ghana te laten toenemen en bestaande verzekerden te behouden.

In 2009, the Anti-Homosexuality Bill introduced in Uganda’s Parliament reignited homophobic sentiment across Africa. The debate continues today, despite a well-documented history of sexual diversity in Africa, and claims that homosexuality is not only “un-African” but a Western imposition are being used to justify violence and exclusion. Based on the article 'Locating Neocolonialism, "Tradition," and Human Rights in Uganda's 'Gay Death Penalty' by Kristen Cheney, she and Auma Okwany will discuss the tensions and contradictions in the opposition to  homosexuality.

Prof. David Frankfurter, Department of Religion at Boston University. One of the most tantalizing corpora of evidence for the Christianization of Egyptian religion is the great diversity of female figurines, evidently produced in workshops all over Egypt, yet unattested or documented in any texts. This lecture, part of a larger project on the local sites of Christianization, uses these figurines and their forms to reconstruct the iconographic strategies of the workshop, the ritual procedures of the client or ritual subject (at shrine or tomb), and the nature of the domestic shrine. Ensuring economic development for a postcolonial African nation was in itself a monumental task. Yet for landlocked Zambia, development was influenced by more than a colonial legacy. Zambian development issues were directly tied to the volatile situation in Southern Africa, and its methods of negotiating this situation were deeply influenced by the Cold War. Op deze laatste avond richten we het perspectief op de stad Fez vanuit religie en de legende over de ontstaansgeschiedenis. Simon O’Meara zal daarbij de link leggen naar kunst en cultuur in de stad.
Kitty Zijlmans sluit de lezingenserie af met Marokko in het kader plaatsen van de door haar opgerichte World Art Studies aan Universiteit Leiden.

Tussen 1948 en 1994 domineerden de Afrikaner nationalisten de Zuid-Afrikaanse politiek. De democratische transitie maakte een eind aan de apartheid en in 2000 veranderde de status van de Afrikaners (de blanke Afrikaanstalige inwoners van Zuid-Afrika) blijvend. Jacob Boersema deed cultuursociologisch onderzoek naar het cultureel trauma van Afrikaners na de afschaffing van de apartheid.

Na o.a. Gerrit Komrij en Adriaan van Dis ontvangt Stef Bos de Van Riebeeck-penning. Stef Bos krijgt de Van Riebeeck-penning wegens 'zijn langdurige bijdrage aan de culturele en taalkundige betrekkingen tussen Nederland en Zuid-Afrika', zoals in de bijbehorende oorkonde zal komen te staan. Het NZAV-bestuur denkt daarbij onder meer aan zijn jarenlange samenwerking met Zuid-Afrikaanse artiesten en kunstenaars, en meer recentelijk aan het Afrikaanstalige album “Kloofstraat”.
